Were women prettier back then or were photographers better?

Women weren't neccesarily more beautiful I've come across plenty of women who looked remarkably like their hubbies which is so sad, and I refer more to their bone structure I guess you could say it was more like they were trans-gendered in appearance.
In what way do you mean, were photographs better? Certainly not the quality. Though having said that I have come across many the well kept photograph that has out faded the Polaroid.
