Does anyone know what kind of paint is used for this stuff? It'd be cool to do my own customization, but I don;t want anything that will chip or peel.

Try using acrylics, then use a top coat to prevent chips......for shoes use acrylics but not glittery-type or metallic....and for head phones acrylics and permanent markers with a top coat to prevent fading/chips....
