I'm no professional... but 12x optical zoom helps... get your initial focus on the moon (ie. hold the button halfway)... then position it where you want it...
That's pretty much how it worked for me...
Also good to have another object in shot... gives it proportion... thus get it while it's big and close to the horizon...
