Description I see a lot of people struggle with drawing canine legs and finally after seeing a post on furry paws asking for a tutorial, I figured.. why not? I'm no expert, and I strongly encourage you to study real pictures of dogs to see for yourself their range of movement and structure.

Hope this helps some

Edit: Redrew this with slightly better anatomy. It's much cleaner too!

Assuming the straight blue lines to be straight, long bones and the blue ovals to be the scapula (Β shoulder blade ) and pelvis respectively, you seem to have missed out the upper long bone on the rear leg, i.e. the femur, equivalent to the thigh bone of the same Latin name in a human skeleton.

In the rear leg, your lower straight blue line is the equivalent of the human ankle and foot bones (Β tarsals and metatarsals, which in a dog act as the lower part of the leg), the pastern and the toes, often mistaken for the equivalent of the calf in humans. Your upper straight blue line is the tibia and fibula, as in the human calf. Above that, and angling up and to the right, should be another straight line/long bone; the femur. It should attach to the dog's pelvis towards the tail region. Above that, and angling upward and to the left, should be your oval, representing the dog's pelvic bones.

Google for 'canine skeleton' or 'dog skeleton' to get a visual picture of what IΒ mean.

thank you I don't use this method anymore (I actually do use guidelines as you've described), nor do I understand why it still gets so many views lol. This is about 5 years outdated now and really needs to be redone. Which I will do if I get a chance!
