Description
DionysusOne of the 12 Olympians. God of wine, vegetation, pleasure, ecstasy, festivity, fertility, luxuriance. Patron god of the theater. Son of Zeus and mortal princess Semele, twice-born after he was birthed fully grown from Zeus' thigh.
Attributes include the thyrsus, kantharos, leopard, grapevine and ivy, phallus, bull (horns).
Often seen with hanging around with horny drunk Satyrs and frenzied Maenads. Structurally speaking, he can be considered the archetypal outsider: half-divine birth cf. rest of the Olympians; wanderings in Asia and thus association with the East; his function of inducing ecstasy ("outside-of-oneself"-ness).
This took me way too long...OTL
I'm holding off on coloring this monstrosity until...well, until I feel like it.
[EDIT: Yep. Like always, not a stellar coloring attempt. Thanks to Gimp, it's not completely shit. Here's a bigger version of the lineart [link] for whatever reason.]
Sadly, no Maenads here. You'll just have to make do with the perverted satyrs. Hohoho~
Also, I'm still debating whether I should keep him young and beardless and "pretty" or go for unkempt-drunkard-facial hair. Hrm hrmm.
Media: pencil, ink, watercolors on cold-press watercolor paper, Gimp

Hehe, thank you! There are so many depictions of a fat, ruddy, middle-aged Dionysus, but I went with the pretty-boy route here for my own shallow reasons!

I love how you didn't make him fat <3

XD I'll leave that version for other artists to depict. Youthful, handsome/pretty Dionysus for me~
I'm glad you like him! Thank you :>

Dionysus is by far my favorite Greek God out there, Thanatos the God of Peaceful Death coming in at 2nd! This was beautifully drawn and I absolutely love it~!

Dionysus is certainly one of the more interesting Greek gods!

I'm happy that you didn't draw dionysus as a big, fat man with a red nose ^^ . He's just beautiful ^^

Very accurate rendering of Dionysus...the golden tresses and seductive eyes, reminiscent of Euripides' "The Bacchae" description of the god. Beautiful, beautiful work here. Exquisite!
Congrats!!

I really love how you were able to successfully incorporate so many of his attributes! The burgundy color you used in the background, is lovely, and really goes great with the wine thing. I also enjoy how you drew his hair; those curls look great.

Haha, yeah...darkness conceals defects.. >_>;;
You have a good point. I haven't really thought much about Dionysus' appearance before doing this...but I did vaguely associate him with the whole "wine-dark" thing. Hm..now I'm curious as to how different he might look with dark hair; I might just have to revisit this (unlike the lines, hair can be fixed yay! XD).

Earthy Dionysus of the flowing locks :3
I actually recommend leaving this picture the way it is. Dark hair on him now would fade into the background.

I really like your Dionysus with the grapevine details! It looks so luxurious! And that leopard What do you mean you can't ink XD Inking on coldpress watercolor paper is such a pain though! Even I find myself struggling to keep my lines straight on the stuff, but it's so official feeling for the commissions I'm doing now XD;;;
Although--and I'm really sorry to say this after you've inked it and all--the only complaint I have is Dionysus's anatomy. His torso and limbs just look...short.

Boolsajo In reply to ipmaster [2011-07-17 22:39:33 +0000 UTC]
I think I might've gone a bit overboard..but grapevines are actually kind of fun.
This coldpress paper (Strathmore) is actually smoother compared to some of the other kinds I've used...though perhaps all the tinkering with pencil and erasers might've smoothed it out a little more...? LOL, I dunno. But anyway. It took me some hours over a span of a couple days to ink it. Ugh. Tedium...
Oh noes! I was hoping no one would notice-- LOL, no, JK
Thanks for the critique! There's always something funky going on with my anatomy, I'll just have to be more alert and practice D: more.

Inking is pretty fun when you get into it Well, if you're inking with a brush pen, it should be easier on the wrist XD I always find myself tripping over the small bumps of the coldpress paper. I've even started feeling for the smoother side of the paper to draw on. Ahaha. By far the smoothest surface to ink on would be sketchbook papers and cardstock, in my opinon.
For the anatomy, I think you were too swept up by the composition of the picture itself. I sometimes find myself facing the same difficulty. It's something to be aware of in future pictures.

Hahahhh...I guess you're right...I'm just used to doing random shading with pencils and shiz, and inking isn't very conducive to what I normally do..
I was actually on the fence about inking this, because in the start I knew it was going to end up watercolored. But then the penciling got way too messy, so I caved and decided to do some inking practice. Thankfully, the paper wasn't too bad and the ink was rather cooperative.
Hmmm...composition's definitely a very weak point for me, and in this piece I don't think the composition is good enough to use as a valid excuse, but you're right. Also, the inking and the lines were distracting OTL

Is your ink waterproof? Are you going to watercolor it ?
Hmm...for detail pieces, it might help to use larger pieces of paper, so you don't have to worry about cutting anything off or skimping out on any details. But of course, the downside is that large pieces are a pain to scan...People should make larger scanners available to the general public!

Sakura micron pen, brand-spankin'-new 0.03 Copic multiliner, Faber-Castell waterproof Indian ink, and random calligraphic ink (which isn't as waterproof as the others, which made me panic a bit, but ended up not a biggie). Whew. Oh, and I already watercolored it.
Yeah...I've considered doing stuff on larger paper, but the biggest catch is...just, too much (more) effort. My attention span is short enough as it is. Plus scanning/photographing issues, but that's secondary.

Oooh! Textures! and detail! as always, though the focus seems to be more on Dionysus' companions than himself, but that might be due to line weight

Haha, yeah, details fun fun..
I totally goofed on the inking (I hate inking omg). I used a brush pen for the satyrs and leopard, and you can obviously see how much more practice I need in order to use the damn thing properly with the whole manipulating line thickness and shiz. Ah well. It's a slow learning process.

Because dA is acting weird and not letting me comment on my own thread... I hijack this one!
I actually like the coloring you used - rich and semi-chaotic, very indicative of Dionysus himself.
I'm also jealous of your facial expressions and lining/inking skills. Stop dissin' them! D: Finding the right brush is REALLY difficult... I myself have downloaded oodles of them trying to find some that will fit my purposes.

Yeah, dA goes weird sometimes..
I don't have too much beef with my coloring but rather with the lighting/shading...which, actually, is a huge component of coloring...bleh. I actually had to fix a ton of the brightness/contrast/saturation on Gimp to get that dark "richness" (haha, I still have problems with going all out with watercolor), but thanks.
>_< It's just annoying, having to spend hours on inking of all things and not really getting close to my expectations/hopes. I should have bought some new inking/brush pens when I had the chance.

vodkabears In reply to Boolsajo [2011-07-27 04:34:24 +0000 UTC]
D: It can be glitchy.
I've been avoiding lighting/shading so much (and by that I mean I've been doodling and doodling and not coloring anything in) because darker gradients get really messed up on a tablet with little pressure sensitivity. :/ It's frustrating trying to make a dark picture and ending up with something that looks pitch black.
My sentiments exactly. D: My skills in inking and my inking pens are crap, which is why I retreated into the erasable haven of digital art... still wanna learn to do traditional inking someday, though.

Haha, yeah...I should set up a day where I do some actual figure drawing and shading study. Pft. Yeah right...
Traditional inking! There's always time to try it out~ And I, in turn, want to try out digital inking someday. When I bother to get a tablet. Blah.
