Disclaimer: The information below is not to be considered canon in Battlestar Galactica Lore and represents part of a "what-if" head canon scenario in my mind for an alternate universe, similar to the one created as the backstory for the "Battlestar Galactica: War of the Colonies" mod.

The 2CW Universe (Second Cylon War) is a what-if scenario where the initial surprise attack on the Colonies is mostly thwarted but not enough to prevent certain events from happening, like Laura Roslin becoming President via succession for example. The universe uses information from the series, Blood & Chrome, and Deadlock as well as several other fan works for inspiration.

"If you thought the Jupiters were fine like they were, then allow me to prove you wrong." - Sinon Quade

History:
Following the launch of the first Jupiter Class Battlestar, the Battlestar Galactica, the lead architect and shipwright of the Jupiter Class, Sinon Quade, would regularly check the feedback from Jupiter Class officers and crew, making notes and designs to better improve the Jupiter Class moving forward. When Galactica was downed during the attack on Caprica, recovered, and brought to a secret shipyard for repairs, the opportunity to put these improvements in place finally arrived. Galactica underwent an extensive refit, making her not only the first Jupiter Class, but also the first to receive what would be dubbed the Mark II refits. The refit Jupiter Class proved to be significantly more formidable than its Mark I siblings and soon the Colonial Fleet began an effort to rapidly refit their existing fleet of Mark I Jupiters into Mark II specs. The Mark IIs would remain active throughout the conflict and would be the Battlestars of choice for command roles, being at the head of most Battlestar Groups. The Mark II Jupiters gained a reputation for being incredibly durable and tough, being able to withstand extensive damage. After the introduction of the Mark II, it became exceedingly rare for Jupiter Class Battlestars to be lost in combat. Only three were ever lost during the First Cylon War, one of which was the Battlestar Columbia which was destroyed on the very last day of the First Cylon War during Operation Raptor Talon, after sustaining multiple nuclear impacts and a sustained bombing run by Cylon forces, after which her reactor went critical, resulting in the ship's destruction. Columbia's crew would be honored by a memorial on all Twelve Colonies, with each of Columbia's respective crew from those colonies listed on the memorials there.

During the Armistice, the Jupiters would largely be stripped down to their original Mark II fittings, and pressed into a peace-time service role. Over the span of forty years, the Jupiters would gradually be phased out in favor of newer Battlestars. The arrival of the Mercury Class Battlestar though largely sealed the Jupiter Class's fate, and they began being mothballed and ultimately scrapped. By the time the Second Cylon War broke out, only one Jupiter remained, the original, the Battlestar Galactica. Galactica was originally intended to be decommissioned and turned into a museum dedicated to the First Cylon War. However, her actions during the Zero Hour attacks on the Twelve Colonies by the Cylons in protecting a civilian fleet from the Cylons, earned both her and her crew recognition and Galactica was recommissioned and returned to active duty. Galactica is the last active Jupiter Class Battlestar in service, but there has been rumblings among the brass at the Ministry of Defense about building new Jupiters. The words "Mark III" have also been uttered.

The Mark II Jupiters were easily distinguished, even from a distance, from their Mark I siblings, and many in the Colonial Fleet assumed them to be a new class of Battlestar altogether at first. Many started calling them Galactica Type or Galactica Class and the name eventually became synonymous with the class itself. By the time the Armistice ended, the average Colonial assumed "Galactica" to be the class name of the Jupiter Class. The fact that the Battlestar Galactica is the sole remaining Jupiter Class has not helped to dispel this assumption.

Technical Information:
The Mark II Jupiter Class represents an extensive redesign and rebuild of the original Mark Is. The Mark IIs retain much of the same features as the Mark Is but each of these features are improved upon. The Mark Is were armed with sixteen Heavy Battlestar Artillery Batteries but the Mark IIs increase that number to twenty-two, with sixteen of its batteries evenly and symmetrically located in small groups of four on its dorsal and ventral sides while six more batteries are located beneath the Jupiter's prow for a more formidable forward attack. The number of point defense CIWS batteries has also been increased along with the number of missile tubes. The arms on the Jupiter's retractable flight pods have been reduced from three per pod to two, with the central arms being removed. This has increased the overall hangar space in the flight pods, allowing a greater number of Vipers and Raptors to be carried aboard the Jupiters. The Mark IIs also require fewer crew members to properly operate, cutting the original number of five-thousand down to three-thousand. Most of the inherent design flaws of the Mark Is have been eliminated in the Mark IIs save one. The Mark IIs still have to retract their flight pods in order to make an FTL jump, else they run the risk of "breaking her back" and stranding the ship to sublight speeds until the necessary in depth repairs can be performed.

During the First Cylon War, not long after receiving the initial Mark II refit, Galactica received what was referred to as the "War Jupiter" Refit which more than doubled the number of Heavy Battlestar Artillery batteries, while also adding thirty-two light cannons to the Jupiter's forward hull. The War Jupiter Refit only lasted for a few months and a handful of engagements before being recalled and the refits rolled back to the original Mark II specs. The additional guns caused undue stress on the hull and on several occasions caused weapons' malfunctions, rendering entire batteries inoperable. Commander Silas Nash, Galactica's Commander at the time recalled how the engineering crew nearly mutinied over the tiresome workload of having to repair equipment damaged by the additional weaponry. However some of the upgrades from the War Jupiter Refit were kept, such as improved computer systems and a few additional autonomous features that reduced crew requirements by a hundred. Another kept upgrade were two additional batteries mounted on the forward hull on the port and starboard sides of the prow, providing additional forward firepower.
