Disclaimer: The information below is not to be considered canon in Battlestar Galactica Lore and represents part of a "what-if" head canon scenario in my mind for an alternate universe, similar to the one created as the backstory for the "Battlestar Galactica: War of the Colonies" mod.

The 2CW Universe (Second Cylon War) is a what-if scenario where the initial surprise attack on the Colonies is mostly thwarted but not enough to prevent certain events from happening, like Laura Roslin becoming President via succession for example. The universe uses information from the series, Blood & Chrome, and Deadlock as well as several other fan works for inspiration.

"This ship is a razor. It allows us to swallow our fear, to set aside our hesitation, our revulsion, the natural inhibitions that, during battle, can mean the difference between life and death." - Adm. Helena Cain

History:
Designed and deployed within the last decade of the Armistice, the Mercury Class Battlestar was designed explicitly to replace the aging and nearly extinct Jupiter Class Battlestar (Galactica was the only Jupiter remaining at the time of the Mercury Class's development). The Mercury Class represents the pinnacle of Colonial Military Technology and was deployed as new flagships for the Colonial Fleet's Battlestar Group Leaders. By the time of the Second Cylon War, the Mercury Class was the flagship of a simple majority of the Battlestar Groups in service. When the Second Cylon War broke out, the Mercury Class proved its ferociousness, earning the nickname, the Beast, by many in the Colonial Fleet.

Among the most recognizable Mercury Class Battlestars are the Battlestars Pegasus and Atlanta. The Battlestar Atlanta is the flagship of Admiral Peter Corman, one of the ranking members of the Ministry of Defense.

The Battlestar Pegasus is the flagship of the 62nd Battlestar Group under the command of Admiral Helena Cain. The Battlestar Pegasus earned its fearless reputation during the initial attack on the Twelve Colonies. At the time of the attack, Pegasus was docked with the Scorpion Fleet Shipyards to undergo a three month refitting and overhaul. When emergency orders arrived to have the Command Navigation Program removed from the Pegasus systems, a Cylon infiltrator and saboteur, a Number Six model using the alias Gina Inviere, attempted to thwart the removal of the program, only to be caught and exposed as a Cylon agent. She was taken to Pegasus' brig pending prisoner transfer. The attack on the Colonies began hours later and waves of nuclear warhead armed Cylon Raiders arrived, attacking the shipyards. Admiral Cain, suspecting an attack was imminent given the emergency orders, had already ordered Pegasus to action stations as well as ordered the shipyards ready and standing by for imminent attack. When the raiders arrived, Pegasus and the handful of other ships, operating on skeleton crews, managed to repel the attacking Cylons. When their raiders failed, a trio of Cylon Basestars jumped into range. The ships assisting Pegasus were mostly destroyed or crippled by the Basestars as a result of damage sustained by the raiders, low crew compliments, and shipyard crewmen inexperienced in operating military craft, leaving Pegasus alone to deal with the Basestars. Despite being outnumbered, Pegasus put up a formidable fight, destroying two basestars and seriously damaging the third, forcing it to retreat. The Battle of the Scorpion Shipyards proved the versatility and ferociousness of the Mercury Class Battlestar that day. After the battle, Pegasus was repaired and the refitting and overhaul was accelerated. The Cylon, Gina Inviere, was kept aboard the Pegasus for interrogation.

Technical Information:
The Mercury Class Battlestar was modeled after the retired Minerva Class Light Battlestar from the First Cylon War. Unlike its technical predecessor, it sports a far more durable frame and armor plating, and boasts incredible firepower. The Mercury Class presently carries the most Battlestar Artillery Batteries of any other military vessel in Colonial History. The Mercury Class specializes in frontal assaults, its most dangerous facing being its fore. During the Battle of the Scorpion Shipyards, the Battlestar Pegasus was able to destroy a Cylon Basestar in a matter of seconds with a sustained volley from its main guns. Four of the Mercury's guns are locked in a forward position and are geared towards firing heavier armaments that an ordinary artillery battery would not be able to fire without causing undue wear on the cannons itself. The Mercury Class's flanks are by no means defenseless as it can bring almost as many of its gun batteries to bear on enemy craft as its forward facing. In addition, the Mercury Class sports at least two-hundred Viper strike craft. To top off the Mercury's already formidable weapons compliments, the Mercury Class also sports sixteen missile tubes allowing it to fire missiles, torpedoes, mines, or even nuclear missiles against its opponents. The Mercury Class is also the first Colonial Vessel to sport launch tubes for Raptor deployment.

The Mercury's strengths don't end there. The Mercury Class is designed for long term deep-space operations, capable of manufacturing its own combat-ready Viper strike craft given access to the proper materials. This shipboard manufacturing system would later be expanded upon in the Hephaestus Class Forgestar. Additionally the Mercury Class possesses an in-house pilot training simulator suite, enabling Mercury Class Battlestars to train new pilots on the front lines, allowing the Mercury Class to keep its fighter compliments at maximum. Despite the Mercury's size, she has a lower crew requirement compared to their Jupiter Class counterparts, due in no small part to its newer technology and a more streamlined design to its systems.

The Mercury Class has a relatively favorable thrust-to-mass ratio, enabling it to chase down fleeing enemy craft. However, it has maneuverability comparable to the Jupiter Class, so turns are slow. Its aft facing is also nearly completely defenseless due to the positioning of its engines. This is a flaw consistent with most Battlestars, but with the Mercury Class it's more pronounced as there are fewer guns located on the Mercury Class's dorsal or ventral facing, forcing any aft-defenses to be taken up by the guns on the Mercury's flight pods, the Mercury's Viper Compliments, or by any escorting craft.
