Description The image above is an edited version of the official art put out by Lucasfilm and Disney. I edited the image to give it a background and a "hologram" filter.

This image is to help explain the state of affairs in my Star Wars fanfiction series, Star Wars: The House of Rook which is part of my Shadow Wars Universe and is not to be considered canon outside of that universe. It uses a blend of primarily True Star Wars Canon (Pre-Disney) and D-Canon (Disney Star Wars)

Disney, as usual, seems to have dropped the ball a little in giving this class of ship a proper background so much of this information will be my own canon. This is my attempt to give the Razor Crest, or at least its class, a proper background and history akin to what you would find in True Canon.

"A Razor Crest? I considered one for a while but could never afford one. Their owners are stubborn types as once you get one, you don't want to give it up. Very reliable model." - Ailyn Vel regarding the Razor Crest.

History
In the lead-up to the Clone Wars, Kuat Drive Yards had gotten the commission from Jedi Master Syfo-Dias to develop starships for the impending Clone Army he was creating. During the design process for what would become the LAAT/i Gunship, engineers from KDY's subsidiary, Rothana Heavy Engineering, became conflicted as to how they wanted to tackle troop transportation. There were debates and arguments over whether to make the gunship a repulsorlift based vessel dependent on a carrier for interstellar travel or a hyperdrive equipped spacecraft. The result for the latter option became dubbed the "Razor Crest" by its developers. The repulsorlift variant was the one that ultimately won out and would serve with distinction throughout the Clone Wars. However the Razor Crest was by no means abandoned. While Syfo-Dias's representative, a man named "Tyrannus" would pass on the Razor Crest's design, the engineers at KDY saw it as a potential moneymaker and acquired the schematics, releasing the Razor Crest as the ST-70-Class Razor Crest M-111 Assault Ship.

The Razor Crests would be sold as a general military or police gunship, capable of performing patrols throughout systems or be used as a longer ranged military vessel. The Grand Army of the Republic would acquire a few Razor Crests but at the discretion of Jedi General Rahm Kota who, aside from mistrusting the clones and using his own trained militia of soldiers, needed a longer ranged transport for his militia to use so they could launch surgical strikes over longer distances rather than bring in entire carriers. Years later, during the Rebellion, Kota's Militia would use several Razor Crests during their failed attack on the Nar Shaddaa Imperial Shipyards. The Rebellion would similarly use Razor Crests in addition to other assorted transports in their fight against the Empire. Shara, a former bounty hunter that had joined the Rebellion and would serve with Grey Squadron, owned a Razor Crest and would use it as part of Grey Squadron, however her Razor Crest would be destroyed during a mission late into the war but fortunately nobody had been aboard at the time.

After the Galactic Civil War ended, Razor Crests in the New Republic era, most of them all carry overs from the Rebellion, were gradually retired, being replaced by Incom Corporation's UT-60D U-Wing Gunship as the New Republic's primary interstellar gunship. However the Razor Crest has persisted as a popular mercenary and bounty hunter vessel and the various planetary militias and law enforcement agencies that possess Razor Crests have been loathe to replace them. Even into the Shadow Wars of 28 ABY, the Razor Crests can still be seen in some planetary jurisdictions as viable patrol craft or in the hands of bounty hunters. It's also not been unusual for a Razor Crest to be used as a makeshift freighter owing to its ample cargo and passenger space and excellent speed.

The Razor Crests are designed as multirole assault ships, blurring the line between gunship and starfighter as they're fast fairly maneuverable with an excellent balance of shields and two powerful forward laser cannons. Their biggest flaw however is their armor as the armor is not as strong as other ships that serve the same role. However it is hoped that the better speed, maneuverability, and shields, is enough to compensate for this weakness and the armor can be upgraded to be more durable. They can carry up to thirty humanoids within their main holds while an additional four can ride in the cockpit if necessary. They lack a secondary armament by default but most owners can retrofit them with other weapons such as ion cannons or concussion missiles. Some have been refitted with tail or dorsal mounted turret guns for defense. Additionally, some Razor Crests have had their main holds modified to include large bay doors that can be opened within atmospheres similar to the bays on the LAAT/i Gunships. The ease of modification and the general versatility of the Razor Crests have made them viable in the decades since they first appeared on the market. It is known that a nameless Mandalorian Bounty Hunter operating in and around the planet Navarro in the years after the Fall of the Empire owned a Razor Crest and used it for several years before it was destroyed at some point in 9 ABY.
