Disclaimer: The information below is not to be considered canon in Battlestar Galactica Lore and represents part of a "what-if" head canon scenario in my mind for an alternate universe, similar to the one created as the backstory for the "Battlestar Galactica: War of the Colonies" mod.

The 2CW Universe (Second Cylon War) is a what-if scenario where the initial surprise attack on the Colonies is mostly thwarted but not enough to prevent certain events from happening, like Laura Roslin becoming President via succession for example. The universe uses information from the series, Blood & Chrome, and Deadlock as well as several other fan works for inspiration.

Please note that BSG canon is going to differ a lot from my version of the Valkyrie Class. We can assume that the Valkyrie Class's role in First Cylon War operations was filled by the Artemis Class Light Battlestar in my take on the universe. Part of this is because the Valkyrie is said to have participated in the Ghost Fleet Offensive yet the Valkyries aren't available at all as a ship choice in Battlestar Galactica Deadlock (as of this writing at least) and I tend to use Deadlock as my go-to guide for First Cylon War ships and technologies.

"They're small, but their size is to their advantage. Fast, dependable...I'd hate to be a Cylon and see a pack of Valkyries and Apollos headed their way." - President Richard Adar regarding the Valkyrie Class.

History:
Designed during the twentieth year of the Armistice, the Valkyrie Class Light Battlestar was one of the first new Battlestar designs to be rolled out in accordance with the Colonial Fleet's efforts to produce new Battlestar classes. The first in her class was the Battlestar Valkyrie itself which would eventually come under the command of Commander William Adama. Although not yet tested in combat before the outbreak of the Second Cylon War, the Valkyrie Class found its niche as peace-time security vessels, being able to pursue rogue space craft and ferry squadrons of Vipers into patrol areas. When the war began, the Valkyries found themselves assigned as part of mainline forces, making up the majority of the Battlestars in service in the Colonial Fleet. At last count, it is estimated that roughly twenty-five percent or more of the Colonial Fleet's capital grade vessels is made up of Valkyries.

Six years before the outbreak of the Second Cylon War, the Battlestar Valkyrie participated in a top secret operation to deploy a prototype stealth-based viper referred to as a Stealthstar across the Armistice Line in an attempt to spy on the Cylons during the Armistice. The mission resulted in failure as Commander Adama was forced to shoot down the Stealthstar to prevent its capture by an investigating Cylon ship. This led to Adama's eventual reassignment to the aging Battlestar Galactica as a means of gradually retiring the disgraced Commander. Valkyrie herself would be transferred to the command of another Colonial officer. After the Cylons attacked, ending the Armistice, William Adama, newly promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral for his heroic actions with the Battlestar Galactica in protecting a civilian fleet which included the next President of the Twelve Colonies during the attack, requisitioned the Battlestar Valkyrie as part of the newly reactivated BSG-75, with Galactica as his flagship. Adama's choice in picking the Valkyrie itself was due not only out of sentiment, but out of tactical need. Adama went on record commenting that he would've taken any Valkyrie Class for his group but specifically requested the Valkyrie as a subtle and roundabout means of regaining his first Command.

Technical Information:
The Valkyrie Class is, by all accounts, the smallest Battlestar ever designed and produced by the Twelve Colonies. The Valkyrie was designed similarly to the original Battlestar design, the Artemis Light Battlestar, and was designed explicitly to replace the Adamant Class Light Carrier, and the Berzerk Class Assault Carrier of the First Cylon War while also adding a more formidable destroyer to the Colonial Fleet. The Valkyrie operates best as the command vessels for wolfpack squadrons of fast attack ships such as Apollo Class Corvettes leading hit-and-fade operations against Cylon forces, or as Jump-in-jump-out surgical strike carriers, often carrying squadrons of Vipers and Raptors ready to launch within its flight pods, jumping into an area, deploying their strike craft compliments, and then jumping away before the Cylons can react, returning along with the main Colonial Strike Force once the Cylons' FTLs have been disabled by the Viper Squadrons.

In ship-to-ship combat, Valkyries are often underestimated for their firepower, capable of dishing out impressive damage against larger targets while maintaining a high rate of speed. However as many a Valkyrie crewman will state, "a stationary Valkyrie is a dead Valkyrie." The Valkyrie Class relies upon its speed, not its armor, for its defensive capabilities. Its abundance of weaponry has left little in the way armor, making the Valkyrie an effective glass cannon that relies on its speed to prevent receiving fatal damage. Its flak batteries and point defense CIWS are its primary means of fending off approaching wings of Cylon Raiders or intercepting missiles locked onto the Valkyrie in addition to any Vipers that might be active.

During their peace-time security role, the Valkyrie Class were excellent pursuit vessels, capable of tackling almost any pirate or insurgent threat on its own. As such they came standard with a compliment of twenty Vipers (two squadrons) that could handle almost any situation. With the outbreak of the Second Cylon War, Valkyries have seen their roles shift slightly. When not used in wolfpacks with smaller craft, Valkyries assigned to larger Battlestar Groups typically have their Viper squadrons reassigned to larger Battlestars while their viper launch tubes are re-purposed into six additional missile tubes. In combat, Vipers are able to dock with the Valkyries for quick reloads of their secondary ordinances before deploying back out into the combat zone, making them effective fighter support craft. Unlike most Battlestars, the Viper launch tubes are situated so that the vipers are deployed forwards, parallel to the battlestar instead of outwards, away from the ship itself like on most of the larger Battlestar classes. This is out of necessity as the Battlestar's flight pods are too narrow to accommodate outward facing launch tubes.

The Valkyrie Class does have one unique aspect to their flight pods. They're the only Battlestar Class with seal-able flight pods. Large panels in the floors of the flight pods can be raised up to cover and effectively seal and pressurize, turning the flight decks into additional storage space if needed. Valkyries don't need to seal their flight decks for FTL jumps like the Jupiter class does but this feature has been used on semi-regular occasion for transport duties. In one instance, a Valkyrie Class Battlestar used its starboard flight pod as a makeshift prison camp for insurgents from Sagittaron and used the threat of venting the insurgents into space should they attempt anything while in transit to a proper colonial prison facility to keep them pacified. Saggitaron Extremist Tom Zarek was among the insurgents.
