Aaliyah never been able to understand why her best friend had this huge thing about plastic raincoats. Although it was a school rule that rainwear must be worn to (or from) school if it was wet, it was a regulation that few students observed unless it was absolutely bucketing down. The regulations mandated shiny ‘safety yellow’ raincoats which had to be worn over their uniforms. Unsurprisingly no one liked wearing their unfashionable shiny yellow macs much.

In fact, being ordered to wear matching their safety yellow plastic raincoats was deeply unpopular with the majority of her classmates. No one else had to wear them, the complaining students said, but the headmaster was adamant. ‘Your yellow raincoats are a part of your uniform, and you will wear them if it’s raining,’ he said. ‘No ifs, buts or maybes.’ And that was that.

After a number of recalcitrant students received detentions for failing to wear their raincoats, her grumbling classmates remarkably became much more conscientious about donning their rainwear for the twice daily commute, although it didn’t stop them taking them off the moment the rain stopped.

Aaliyah inhaled deeply while she thought about their schooldays. Reminiscing, ‘We looked like so many ducks when it was really rainy.’
