Description
Quilla
Windborne, Caves near Windwhisper Beach
Summer 773

While combing the beach with an older nomad, Quilla encountered a box that had been washed ashore. Within that box was a object unlike anything she had ever seen. It smelled of wood and leather but was painfully thin and delicate, covered in detailed markings and exotic metallic dyes which must have been made with the most painstaking care and great skill and knowledge.

She brought this back to her cave, to keep the dyes or the thin wood from being damaged by the damp sea spray. In the safety of the cave she inspected it. The pages were covered in strange repetitive markings, too fine and even to have been made by a fawnling hoof. But there were also drawings.

The drawings were of animals, strange and distorted. Some, lizards and birds, seemed like things she had encountered before. Others sounded like things she had heard from stories from other kingdoms; predators as big as fawnlings, like thylacines with shorter faces and broader bodies. Still others seemed so bizarre she wasn't sure if they were animals at all.

Sometimes, a stray breeze would whip through the cave, flipping through the pages. It wasn't hard to see that as an omen, and Quilla was careful to take note of what creature was left featured when this happened. Often there seemed a kind of order to it; if she was wondering whether she should made a journey it might flip to a page with a bird in flight. If she was thinking of how to end a conflict it might open to a page with two serpents wrestling. Quilla had experienced visions from her fawnhood, and it was no large stretch to begin interpreting the pages in the same way as the flashes she often got.

Soon, word spread about her bestiary and that she might be able to use its guidance to solve problems or see the future. Molach was speaking to her through it, some said. Nomads would stop by on their travels to see her and ask her to read the pages for them.

Quilla has found a medieval illuminated bestiary (token #0581) and uses it loosely as a sort of tarot deck, giving her a reputation as some kind of oracle among the NPC members of her nomad band.
