Description It feels really nice to be doing big illustrations like these again. : D Originally this picture was just going to be a Rhydon standing in some sort of ambiguous cave-like background, but I wanted to push it further. I wanted to tell a story (albeit a simple one) and to show what I think life in a Pokemon's natural habitat would be like. Enter Exploud, (who seriously needs more love, by the way!) and viola, a clash between two overly-aggressive and territorial cave-dwelling Pocket Monsters~

First time drawing a cave, so I struggled with the lighting a lot. Critique would be appreciated! I don't bite! Promise!

I like this image alot. The lighting for anything that is obscured can be difficult to produce and I think you could have done more in that aspect. Cave surfaces arent as smooth as we might think but you did quite well in portraying some degree of texture. The threehardest light sensitive areas to paint in my belief is caves, underwater and benieth any sort of tree where the light is dotted. Try playing with the light a little more though and darken the area closest to the battle scene especially Exploud's head. As far as the setup itself, its very nice. The confrontational poses of both Pocket Monsters are classic Pokemon but also brings a more natural feel to them as they are in fact animals in nature. Rhydon and Exploud have very confrontational tendencies to begin with as they are extremely territorial. And the addition of Aron in the background on the ledge looking down at its potential future is really the keystone into making it all work. If Aron wasn't there, this image would not tell a story. It would be just another of the countless battle scenes between Pokemon. But here you have a sense of personality comming from everyone in the painting. All in all, I give it a 7/10 strictly for the lighting as there is a lot that can be changed but I am definately making this my background on my laptop.
Good job.

ok, i'm going to try this critique thing.
The idea of two big, rough and tumble cave pokemon is great. The aron is a subtle yet great accent to the picture, it's expression is priceless, and I love it all the more because that will be aron (as an aggron) in that battle fighting for territory in the future. The waterfall is a gorgeous touch, and I love the lighting created by the holes in the ceiling.

Kisharu [2010-04-28 18:16:50 +0000 UTC]

I really like the idea of drawing a scene from what natural pokemon life would look like :3 It's a very cool and unique idea! I really like the lighting that you've achieved so far, though the angle you have it coming in on Rhydon...well, it makes me think that the side of Exploud that we see would be darker...like, not a lot of highlights on that side? Unless there's another hole in the cave's ceiling? It's hard for me to think of the right words here...hmm...like, if the light's hitting Rhydon at that angle, then it would hit on the opposite of Exploud, so we wouldn't see so many highlights on the side facing us...it would be mostly dark, with maybe some highlights on the very top of his head and some on his tail like you've already got.

I've been studying light/shadows for the past month in drawing so I like to think I know a little something haha :> I mean, I'm no good with backgrounds so I can't help you there...but I think it looks wonderful so far~ I just loooove how you've done the rays of light filtering through the holes in the ceiling and the way that it fills the space where the waterfall is, it's just so gorgeous

But I'm not an upgraded member so I technically can't leave a critique lol...but I hope what I said makes sense? I usually dislike critiquing sometimes cause I don't know if what I say will hurt someone's feelings? cause I know I can get mine hurt easily if I've worked hard on something and been proud of it and then someone critiques what I felt was the best part...y'know? Lol but you did ask for a critique so I trust you'll take it as such

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BrainDeadMareep In reply to Kisharu [2010-04-29 02:53:34 +0000 UTC]

I see what you're talking about on the lighting and I agree completely. I'll have to be a bit more attentive to that factor next time for a more natural look.

That's really awesome that you've been studying light and shadows! I find that is one of the most interesting areas of drawing/painting. I need to do a few lighting studies myself, but I get so lazy. xD;;; So, yes, I think I shall start doing a few studies/practice pictures when lighting a big picture like this in the future. Good advice! Thanks a bunch!

And I know what you mean about critique being be hard to take sometimes. Especially if it's on a picture where I know there are a lot of flaws, but I figure that if it will help me improve in the long run, it's worth it to listen to even the smallest suggestion.

Oh, wow, listen to me ramble on... Anyway thank you very much again for your time and input!
