So. I've been hanging around the Homestuck anon request meme on livejournal lately. Written a little (not incredibly great) fanfic, read quite a bit of (really pretty good) fanfic...

I did a piece a few days ago on the prompt:
There is immense TL;DR ahead; you have been warned.

Mindfang's journal has implied a few very interesting things about Troll biology, especially how the Hemospectrum affects factors like lifespan and body heat. Some of these differences seem to vast to be contained to a single species of creature.

Modern trolls, as we know them, are in fact a hybrid of two compatible, but differing progenitor species, which deliberately began to interbreed millenia ago. A troll's position on the Hemospectrum indicates how close a troll is, genetically to either of those progenitors. The 'blue' species were long-lived, hyperviolent, aquatic, cool-blooded crustaceans. The 'red' species were psychic, hot-blooded short-lived butterfly monstrosities. Awesome.

Tangent: The hybridization was a mutually beneficial process; the blue species tended towards self destruction via centuries of violent, complicated politics, while the red species was too short-lived to assemble all the art and history and culture that makes everyone awesome (and also they are prone to PSYCHIC WAR OUT OF NOWHERE). The delicacies of navigating multi-species breeding programs is why the quadrant system developed.

Modern trolls don't know what the fuck, just that gills are cool and few trolls get them, and that wings are cool and few trolls get them.

Anyway. Karkat's bright candy blood is not because he is an aberrant mutant; rather it is because he is an anomalous genetic throwback, the purest relation to the 'red' species in several thousand years. Now that he's six solar sweeps, he's going to actualize his genetic heritage, go through horrible alien puberty, steal all the printer paper, build himself a paperwasp nest using his saliva, and pupate (again) into a glorious psionic butterfly monstrosity.
It's pretty sweet once everyone stops freaking out.
