Chapter ?? Book two.

So there we were, surrounded, trapped. We were waiting for the last fight of our lives. There was no need to check everyones injuries, or the looks they had on their faces. Because I know what they were thinking. I knew the look of focus and hidden fear that was stuck on all of our hearts. After all there was no chance of us even walking away from this. Amela was out cold and bleeding profusely. Sarah was doing everything she could to to keep her breathing. While Pride, Taylie and I stood around them in a triangle, trying to cover every side.

How many hits have Taylie and Pride taken so far? I could only just now glance at them, but only for a second. Every time my eyes left our attackers they twitched, ready to pounce and tear us limb from limb.

Pride was still standing of course, but just barely. Even his incredible fighting spirit couldn't hold him up for much longer. The fact that he was even still alive with all of his wounds, bore testimony to his strength and resolve. Tayla wasn't much better. She was almost missing an arm at this point, and her left eye was totaled in a very gruesome manner.

"You two ready?" I asked coughing up a handful of blood. My rib cage felt like a bag of crushed glass mixed with razor sharp strips of metal, breathing was nearly impossible. Wings being as trashed as they are were almost numb. The right had caught a few claws and was dyed red with its own blood. The left was broken in at least five...ugh, 7 places and wouldn't budge.

"Yeah I'm rea..." Pride was cut off by Sarah's panicked screams.

"SAM! Amela. She's ...She stopped breathing." My heart sank as I kept my stance but turned my head. Amela's sweet innocent eyes, were cold and blank. Her face was already beginning to pale. Warmed only by Sarah's sobbing tears. Even Pride shed a tear at that horrible moment, the only tear I've ever seen him cry. My pain disappeared into a cloud of sorrow and regret. A heavy numb feeling pulled me to the ground as I turned towards her. Pride stepped to cover my side as best he could.

The mud of that fateful rain filled night, filled the wounds on my knees as I knelt there trying to grasp a hold of my mind. The thought of Amela dying never crossed my mind. After all she could tele-flash away if things got to hairy. I framed her child like face in my hands. The rain washing my blood from her cheeks. There wasn't a fiber of my being that didn't ache at that moment. Amela was the youngest member of our band of misfits. And I had always look at her as a baby sister, maybe even like a daughter. Tears broke past my eyes as Sarah's head fell on my shoulder. I, we, had failed Amela. Broke our promises to protect our baby sister. Now she lay dead in our arms, a puddle of her blood soaking our jeans.

I wanted to take this whole damned day back. To go back to yesterday, and its sunny warmth. The whole day we simply spent upon a grassy hill. Talking and laughing, sharing stories with our newest member Taylea. Pride was on a branch showing off and telling his stories to her. Taylie's normally harsh demeanor was light and ...dare I say it, cheerful. She may have even smiled. Sarah resting on my lap while I leaned against a beautiful oak. Amela showing us the new clothes she had bought. Oh her angelic face lighting up every time Sarah or I smiled and cheered her on.

"Time to fight." Pride warned as our enemies drew closer. Gulping one last tear filled breath, I turned to face Amela's murders, our executioners. Sarah was still in pieces but got up to stand by my side. Her injuries didn't seam to worry her. The pain of losing Amela wallowing in her eyes. Death would be but a release. Her torn skin and shattered leg were just a distant memory compared to the mixed despair and rage that filled her heart. That shot like daggers into my own.

Pride lunged as one of the hellish beast-men were close enough, managing to claw its face, he sent it to the ground. Three others leaped at him that moment, two more on Taylie, four on me and another three at Sarah. I lost sight of everyone after that. After a blow to the my temple. After seeing Pride dragged to the ground and mauled.
