CBR Writer Wants To Change The Origin of She-Hulk In The MCU

The truth is, I've never found her origin story all that. It reads like Stan Lee wrote in a hurry on the back of a napkin to secure rights. It's full of coincidences ( Why would Banner, a man constantly on the run, rusk visiting any relative let alone Jennifer?). And the blood transfusion... is just plain stupid and done for narrative convenience. I even wonder if MCU Jennifer and Bruce should even be related...

I find separating She-Hulk (or Jen) from the Hulk (or Bruce) for any reason so wrong-headed. I think there’s only so much one can change about any character before it’s not the character anymore.
I can’t rave about a She-Hulk (or any) show on the horizon and then start accepting unnecessary changes. There is no non-political/non-pandering reason to make She-Hulk independent to the extent that the info in the link suggests. The article that the Youtuber is commentating on is not just suggesting that the blood tranfusion origin scenario be eliminated, but that any narrative connection She-Hulk has to the Hulk be removed.
It’s fine that you think the Stan Lee origin is dumb. I don’t believe it’s ever stopped you from enjoying anything She-Hulk-related.

No it hasn't stopped me from enjoying SheHulk 😏 But her origin is filled with coincidental events, plot conveniences ( Banner let a close friend DIE FROM AIDS rather than giving him a transfusion that would Hulk him out.... but risking Jennifer is okay?). This worked in a Bronze Age comic, but a more "sciency" explanation would be in order today. As for separating Jennifer from Bruce, I'm really neither hot or cold. As it stands it makes the universe smaller to me, having the family connections that "grant" these powers. I mean it could work if the contrast between Banner/Hulk tormented savagery and She Hulk's comfortable in her own skin amazon were central to the series.... but Mark Ruffalo's fee will make that impossible.... besides Endgame pretty much leaves him in Jennifer's place doesn't it? Radical reimagined origins have worked before with the Hulk franchise. See Bill Bixby.

I can excuse a licensing studio (Universal Television) altering David (!) Banner’s origin.
I couldn’t (and will not) excuse the intellectual property owners (Marvel Studios) producing its own trademarked characters willfully making similar alterations—especially when its for socio-politically motivated reasons.
If the origin is altered, it will not be to remove “coincidental events” and “plot conveniences” or to elevate women in science—okay, maybe to elevate women in science—but to tell us (as I’ve seen it said elsewhere) She-Hulk Don’t Need No Man.
Speaking of men: if that mild salsa-flavored “Professor Hulk” from Endgame is interchangeable for “She-Hulk”, then we’re all f***ed.
You’re using the “impossibility” of a particular actor appearing as justification for the detachment of the Hulk from She-Hulk’s origin, B.!
The idea that Ruffalo would never do this show (for a studio he’s already worked for) because “he’s too expensive” is moot. As I’ve previously implied, in today’s culture, if this show is woke, Ruffalo (an avowed Hollywood leftist) could very well do it for social clout...and a smaller paycheck. (Not sure why we think he’s ballin’ anyway. He’s not won that Oscar® yet.)
I’m shocked at the lack of imagination (among so-called artists!) in the discussions I’ve had here and elsewhere: neither Ruffalo, “Banner” nor “The Hulk” have to appear in the show...to be a part of the show.
Again, I’m not hung-up on the concept that Banner must give Jen a field blood transfusion to turn her into She-Hulk. I’m arguing against the idea that the She-Hulk’s origin be completely detached from the Hulk. The Marvel Universe at its best has been an integrated multigenerational soap opera (everyone knows everybody) since 1963—I don’t understand why that facet would be anathema to any fan (as opposed to consumer) today.
Also, I always saw Banner not sharing his blood and “letting” Jim Wilson die as a callback to the “dumb” She-Hulk origin. The transfusion precedent set that stage.
Is there any canonical evidence that gamma-irradiated blood can cure the diseases of anyone other than Banner? If I’m not mistaken, part of the dilemma in that story was that no one could say with any certainty what Banner’s blood would do to Jim. Unless you’re in Banner’s bloodline (hmmm...) his genetic material only seems to make everything in your life situation worse (ultimately)!

Though that makes a decent point: No. I think she needs a push in the right direction for action/sci-fi/superhero movies/TV shows. Just like what "Supergirl" has done for Melissa Benoist,
and what playing Super Hero Darla has done/will do for Meagan Good!!!

Rasmane In reply to Dark-1-75 [2019-08-25 20:02:53 +0000 UTC]
Meagan Good’s Shazam! role is kinda odd in that she is playing a transmogrified preadolescent—not sure where that can go. She seems to work consistently, so Shazam! seems like a lateral move, as she’s had starring roles (even if in smaller films and cancelled series).
I like looking at Paula Patton but I wouldn’t mind if a black actress didn’t play the green one/the monster this time ’round.

I’d like She-Hulk to look genetically European. The actress would have to be extremely beautiful in the face to be accepted by a general (paying) audience.

Cautiously hopeful about this. I’d prefer a balance of comedy like Sony did with Deadpool before they messed up the Spidey Disney deal, but as long as they don’t skimp on her physical strength it might be ok. I was pleasantly surprised with AOS and early Supergirl, as well as Jessica Jones.

Well in SHEILD you have Melinda May and Bobbi Morse (Mockingbird) as two of the best fighters on the show, Daisy Johnson (Quake) and Elena Rodriguez (Yo-Yo) as two very powerful Inhuman and Jemma Simmons who is not only a genus biologist but has also become quite terrifyingly ruthless when needed. Furthermore all of these women are fully devolved characters who have grown and changed out of all recognition over the course of the show.

I'm kinda sad we won't be seeing her on the big screen. It's the pattern that small-screen Marvel projects tend to be character graveyards, so it's likely not going to be anywhere near doing her justice.

SHFan [2019-08-24 14:01:24 +0000 UTC]
For those who already know, they announced a new She-Hulk TV series. Which is fine, but in this day of age they are not going to make the character the way you think it will be. I found out that it has been confirmed from the guy running Marvel MCU that she will be the sensational version with no transformations. Meaning is just a law and order series with a large green woman lawyer. I will be surprised if they ass a action scene or too, but I strongly feel it will be for comedic effect or something that is SJW/Feminism related. Which I feel it will be a cringe worthy show at the end.
Personally, I would love it if they build up the character per season. Start off as a Savage with uncontrollable transformations, death of Jill and so until later on she takes control and slowly builds up into the sensational version. Have her fight some proper villains and mix in with her lawyer stuff.
However this will never happen because Marvel thinks us Old school fans are trash, so our opinions do not matter at the end. So once again, do not buy into the hype because I do not see this show lasting long.

Feige mentioned that she will be Green, lawyer and most of all a Hulk. Its in all the videos. If you add in the recent political agenda madness into the recent movies and TV shows (Disney/MCU are guilty of this) and it does not take much to figure this out it's a set up for a disaster.

To borrow a line from Neil Gaiman, "it's treating people decently RUN AMOK OH NOOOOOOOO"
To offer a bit more, Sensational She-Hulk dates from 1989. The Byrne run is pretty definitional for what most people consider Shulkie these days. It's hardly surprising that'll be the basis!
