Description
I'm a little stuck on this one so I thought I'd share it and get some feedback if there is any thoughts out there?Mostly, I'm okay with the girl and raven, both need some details and fine tuning but otherwise I'm not too fussed about them, it's the grass I'm a little unsure on.
I've been trying to paint it all in one direction, almost like it's a nest surrounding her and she is stretching out from it, but I'm not sure if I'm achieving that desired effect or not. Perhaps some more hightlighted patches of grass is needed?
Also not sure if the raven looks like he belongs there or not, does it need more shadow under him? I know he blends into the grass a bit, but that was intended, I didn't want him to be too separate from the grass, but enough so you know he's there and it keeps your eye wandering.
Anyway, that's just my current thoughts on this one, if you have any feedback I'd be interested in hearing it.

First off it's a beautiful painting and I find nothing wrong. Your eyes go straight to reclining girl with the white garment. The raven frames her nicely and adds some interest to the image. There are many stories this painting brings to mind. Well done.

I really like the way you have made the girl look like she is sunken into a nest of grass - perhaps darken the nearside grass a bit to complete the hollow? Agree with others about the bird's feet (and perhaps slightly more shadow) - this change would make it look as though the bird is walking around the edge of the nest. If I were working on this one, I would turn the bird's head to look directly at the girl's face, to connect the two effectively - however, the whole thing is quite stunning as it is.

Thank you and yes I was contemplating the head turn on the raven but I wanted his eye to be looking at her (how they look at things with the side of their head rather than straight on)
I may have got it off slightly though as he does seem to be looking more at her neck rather than face.
I have done some work with the shadow since as well as added in the ravens feet, still think the grass could do with more work but I'm over it for now and need to work on something to let my mind recover from allllll of that grass.
Thank you for your feedback

Oh, this one looks beautiful! I enjoy it very much I have noticed a certain "movement" of the grass, but did not think of it as a nest. I understand what you want, and it's a nice idea, but the dynamic flow of the grass (it's like earth itself was flexible) is already really fine. The girl looks comfortable, as if she was laying in a bed. So it does not look too different from the idea of a nest. In my opinion, adding more details to it could make it exaggerated. The way it is has already a special naturalness.
I like the raven and where it is. The ralation girl-raven is what I like the most about it, actually. Its shadow looks correct to me. If it was darker I think it would seem a bit separated from the composition, as you mentioned. And the feathers are fantastic, by the way!
Hope my opinion helps you. This painting is really beautiful!

Thank you very much, all feedback is helpful especially when I get to that stage where I've been staring at it far too long and need some fresh perspective.
I've done a bit more work to it since, still not 100% happy with it but it's getting there

Not being an expert, in my humble opinion, I think that the crow has too deep legs in the grass ... It is very rare to see a bird with its legs sunk in the grass, usually go over it to fly quickly if a danger is approaching ... they rest on top of the grass to be able to jump and fly quickly, if they have sunken legs they can hinder and slow down their flight ...
otherwise, if I see the grass a little lying down, but not too much ... the girl is beautifully painted and if she had to say something, I would say that the shadows of the grass on her body may be too long, since In my opinion, the grass is very lying down to reflect those long shadows on his body.
I hope my comment was helpful ... greetings ...

Ah yes I agree, I think my initial plan was to have the grass in kind of bundles/patches and that patch over his legs was meant to be more in the foreground of the raven, and him to be placed in the lower/flattened patch, but that didn't quite work out so yes, I will add some feet so that he is placed on top rather than in.
I see what you mean about the shadows being too long, but rather than adjust the shadows I might try and highlight some blades of grass to be coming up more vertical in the light.
Thank you for your feedback, it's been very helpful - when you spend so so many hours painting grass it's easy to get lost in the details and miss big parts of the painting that aren't working - fresh eyes are always helpful

I'm glad that my comments help you ...
You're right, I think it's better to put some tall grass in front of the light than to modify the shadows of the grass on the girl ...
I'm looking forward to seeing the changes you're going to make ... I'm sure you can improve considerably this already pretty painting ...
Have a nice day ...

Hey... as you asked for feedback....
My initial and immediate reaction was that there was something wrong with the raven...can't tell you what but its first thing that drew my attention.. shadows/orientation who knows... gut feeling that I cannot explain.
As usual I can find no fault with the girl and to be honest, until I read your comments, I did not think too much of the grass, but it does look like someone dragged a blanket over the whole patch to flatten it... Maybe that's a side effect of you painting in one direction. It could probably be solved by a few more bits like above the ravens head near her hand that go different way... Maybe a few stems/strands that come up high enough to cast a few errant shadows over the girl? Thinking of my kids playing in long grass.. it does not flatten as much as you have made it unless they roll around squishing it down and even then more tends to flick back up in more places.
hope that's helpful?

Thank you and yes it's always helpful to have some fresh eyes on my work especially when I get so lost in painting small details, sometimes even just taking a photo like this and posting it helps me to see it in a new way and find what is wrong with it.
The raven I am stuck on, another comment mentioned I should be able to see his feet as he is too deep in the grass, so I'll do that first and see if it makes a difference, I'm also thinking maybe the contrast needs to be stronger on him where the highlights are, to match the intense sunlight on the girl.
I did want the grass to be flat and coming around her like a nest, but I like your idea of adding some more random strands in an alternate direction towards her.
I think I'll also brighten up all of the grass that is in the sunlight, even though that's going to be a huge job, I think it needs that contrast because right now to me, the girl and raven look like they are in sunlight and the grass looks like it's under cloud cover.
Thanks again for your feedback
