✖ P E R S O N A L I T Y:

Courageous | Suspicious | Loyal | Hard-Working | Territorial

If Ty Hunt were a dog, he's be a classic junkyard pit-bull.  He usually does not make a positive first impression -- he is suspicious and resentful of the very existence of strangers, hyper-vigilant, and always willing to think the worst of someone who's an outsider to his "pack."  He's aggressive, quick to anger, and always ready for a fight, especially when it comes to other men (a very strong alpha-dog streak).  Extremely territorial regarding the Orphan's home base, and in regards to protecting the people who he believes belong there.  If you need a mook who will beat the shit out of someone just because a boss says so, he's your guy.

That said -- this man is always extremely loyal to those he cares for, and to the faction overall.  He'll follow someone he trusts and admires to hell and back, and would fling himself on a live grenade without a second thought to save anyone in his faction (even those he doesn't like or respect).  And he is a tireless worker who might complain a creative blue streak about a crappy job, but he'll be the first to step forward to do it if it needs to be done.  You need someone to storm Normandy Beach?  Ty Hunt is your man.

. Quirks: extremely low pain thresh-hold, largely due to childhood beatings being a normalized thing for him.
. Hobbies:  anything to do with horses -- had been taken online "natural farrier" courses for two years prior to the zombie outbreak and before his employment on the Heartbreak Estate. Prior to the zombie outbreak, hunting, fishing and *cough* poaching were also primary hobbies, along with tinkering with his truck's engine.  It's debatable whether or not to call those "hobbies" now!
. Skills:  a former oil field roughneck, construction worker, and basic mechanic. Also ranching skills, a competent rider, and competent "natural" farrier.  A solid fighter:  a decent but not exceptional shot now with a gun or a bow, but mostly respected for his hand-to-hand skills.  He was an experienced bar-room brawler before the zombie outbreak, and knows the trick to winning is getting in the first blows and making them vicious enough to be the final blows.

✖ H I S T O R Y:
Ty Hunt was born and raised in the Crackbone Creek area.  He had a highly dysfunctional childhood:  his father was a long-haul trucker who simply abandoned the family when Ty was 5 years old; his mother worked part-time as a 7-11 clerk, and spent the rest of her time bouncing between boyfriends and doing drugs.  Ty was largely left to his own devices from age 8 on, caring not only for his own day-to-day needs, but taking care of his young sister Tiffany as well.  The family was beyond dirt-poor -- as his mother descended from being merely an alcoholic to being a full-blown career methhead, free meal programs at school became Ty & Tiffany's primarily source of survival. Ty did fair enough in school, but he was often too hungry to pay attention, and his grades were dismal, and he was regularly in trouble for fighting with other kids who teased him (and his sister) for their situation. Druggy boyfriends moved in and out of the house -- and when they weren't a physical threat to Ty and his sister, his mother's violent moods were.  Ty often took whippings meant for his sister, and protecting the younger girl from the chaotic environment around them was his primarily daily focus.  Sympathetic teachers and school officials often tried to get social services involved, but Ty's mother always rallied just enough for CPS social worker visitations to keep her children under her roof.

During the summer of his 10th year, Ty began to shoplift for food in order keep himself and his sister fed.  When he was finally caught, another shopper intervened to pay his tab.  The man was by a neighboring rancher who's daughter had grown up with Ty's mother. The rancher, Mr. Robeson, took pity on Ty, and offered him a summer job for a little under-the-table cash, moving irrigation pipes and other chores around the ranch.  Ty sprang on the offer, knowing it was a three-mile walk there and back again each day. Ty surprised the rancher on his first day of work by bringing Tiffany along as well -- he wasn't about to leave his little sister behind in their mother's home, alone all day except for the meth-cooking new boyfriend.  The rancher was shocked and angry at first -- but Mrs. Robeson got the full, sordid story from six-year-old Tiffany, and before the day was out, it was made clear to both children that they were both expected to come out to work, six days a week, and that meals were part of their wages.  And if the children wanted to join them for Sunday church services, breakfast was served on the dot at 8 a.m.

The Robeson ranch became the stabilizing force in Ty's life.  He and his sister spent as much as their time there as they could, helping with chores after school and on Saturdays during the school year.  Ty learned everything he could about ranch life -- from basic handyman chores on up to driving a farm truck and fixing its engine.  He was clever with his hands and quickly picked up mechanical skills.   Best of all, in his opinion -- he was introduced to horses.  He learned how to manage his anger around them, he learned how to ride and rope and cut cows.  He learned how to trim hooves and was fascinated by the art of blacksmithing.  And Mr. Robeson taught him to shoot a rifle, and how to hunt deer and feral hogs.  (Mr. Robeson didn't believe in poaching -- any wild animals which were on his property eating his hay crop or drinking water that he owned rights too? That was meat destined for his table, local wildlife department rules and regulations be damned).  Ty's grades never improved much -- he went to school only because he had too, but it was never a sanctuary for him as it was for his sister Tiffany.  His real joy was the Robeson Ranch, the horses, and the feeling of security and accomplishment he earned from working hard and earning a rare word of praise from the stoic Mr. Robeson.

When Ty was 17, the Robeson's were killed in a traffic accident, when a drunk driver crashed head-on into them on the highway.  What stability he had in life vanished:  the Robeson's son inherited the ranch and sold it as quickly as he could, along with all of the stock.  When Ty learned the ranch was being sold, he sneaked onto the place after midnight one night, and drove away with an old RV camper that had been parked out behind the cowshed for years, predicting accurately enough that Mr. Robeson Jr. would never notice the theft. That gave Ty and his sister somewhere of to live -- they parked it in the driveway of their mother's home, but other than using the bathroom and shower, didn't need to interact with their drugged-out mother or her rotating selection of the bottom of the gene pool.  Ty quit school before graduation in order to work and earn a paycheck.  He worked at a number of local jobs -- convenience store clerk, Jiffy Lube mechanic, then house construction.  He supported himself and Tiffany both, earning enough for them to move into a studio apartment when he could. He could buy his sister much, but they could afford her school clothes for her from Walmart, and he scrimped and saved his pennies in order to buy her a prom dress for her senior year.  He was there for Tiffany to see her graduate, and afterwards, he helped her enroll in the U.S. Navy:  her goal was to be a dentist, and military service provided a way for her to get the career training she needed.

When Tiffany enlisted and departed for a career in the military, Ty's own life was suddenly left adrift.  He had been devoted to protecting and providing for his little sister -- and now he was alone.  Ty had no real friends beyond bar-buddies at work.  He accepted an oilfields job in East Texas, then wound up chasing another job out to North Dakota.  It was in North Dakota that he finally got the call he had been expecting for years:  police officers back in Copperhead Creek had found his mother's body in a field. Her remains were ID'd from items found with the body, but it was skeletonized from exposure.  Cause of death was homicidal violence (bones of her throat were crushed).

Ty came home in early 2016 to see to his mother's remains.  Tiffany received a hardship leave and they buried their mother in a private ceremony -- there was no other family to call on to attend, and they had lost all track of their father years ago.   When Tiffany went back to station at Fort Whidby, Ty was left to try and sort out what he wanted to do next.  He had a little saving and a pick-up truck to sleep in.  He had no close friends back in North Dakota, and little incentive beyond money to return there.  There was a boarding stable now, on the property which had once been the Robeson Ranch.  He visited it, with the profound nostalgia of visiting a beloved childhood home.  His only good memories were found to be on this piece of property -- and it occurred to him that if he found a good job and could stay in Copperhead Creek, then he could get a horse of his own and have a reason to spend time on the old Robeson place.  It was with that thought in mind that he stumbled across an advertisement online, searching for a stable manager/riding instructor at a private property outside of town.

Ty had little hope of nailing the job, but knowing that didn't stop him from bullshitting his way into an interview.  He was shocked to find that the woman hiring for the position was an honest-to-God Hollywood celebrity -- the ethereally beautiful Sarafina Mbitsini.  He had seen her series Barbarella on HBO -- because seriously, what red-blooded American male hadn't?  And he had found her even more stunning in real life, so much so that only having a horse on hand had saved him from making a tongue-tied, besotted fool of himself. He still isn't sure how he talked himself into getting the job -- he certainly wasn't qualified for it, beyond what he had learned as a hungry kid from Mr. Robeson.  But somehow, to his shock and awe, Miss Mbitsini chose him. She chose him.  And she gave him a guest house next to her stables, so that he could provide on-site 24/7 care for her horses.  Of which Miss Mbitsini had only the one -- so she gave him a budget with which to buy several more horses and all of the necessary tack and supplies, so that she could take her guests riding on the ranch when they came to visit.

This was more than a dream come true:  Ty had always lived a hand-to-mouth existence, and his dreams had always been stunted, seldom stretching beyond a six-pack of cheap beer and a night browsing Pornhub. No.  A beautiful woman had selected him above all others, and given him a home and a purpose.  On paper, his job was to care for her horses and teach her to ride.  But subconsciously, Ty assumed the role he had already lived:  his sister had needed a guardian and protector, and now this beautiful celebrity, who was recovering from an act of violence committed against her, needed a guardian and protector.  Ty had found his new calling.  Her estate was his territory now -- and loyal pit bull that he is, Ty was determined to guard it.

When the zombie outbreak first began, Ty was quick to seize on the actual danger and refused to all his employer to leave the property.  He was reluctant to allow other survivors through the gates, and did so at first only because Miss Mbitsini ordered it.  As the disaster worsened and civilization began to fail, Ty began to realize that the only way to ensure Sarafina's safety and survival, and the safety of the entire estate, was by cautious recruitment of other people who had the skills (or the labor) necessary.  But which he can and does accept that basic fact, it doesn't mean that he's happy about it.  He still treats each new member of the Orphans Faction with a wary stinkeye, and waits for them either to prove themselves as worthy of the honor of being taken in -- or else give him the least whiff of disloyalty so he can break heads and kick them out again.  He does have a secret soft spot for the various children -- in particular, to the surprise of many, he's developed a close relationship with abandoned young Stringer Lincoln, and identifies closely with the boy.

✖ C O M P A N I O N S:
. Name:   Dane  (678 Remuda's Dance The Night Away )
. Breed:  unknown warmblood type (16 hh)
. Sex: gelding, but he looks pretty studdy.
. Personality: Dane is normally a calm, level-headed, and bombproof horse. Dane does not spook, no matter what's going on. Not very exciteable -- he's always cool as a cucumber, and always has his head focused on the task at hand.  Not aggressive, and is usually a push-over with other horses, but doesn't like being grabbed at.  His favorite thing to do is to relax in the paddock; however, he always loves to work. He is a patient beast with the less experienced riders, and tries his best to do whatever his rider asks of him, even if it defies common horse sense.
