Ha! Well, if you mean... when will I be drawing another HPL comic... I couldn't tell you. Whenever I get another job offer like this, I guess.
This was a very rare and wonderful opportunity.

Thanks for the sentiment... I do appreciate it. But it's not that simple on my end.

Believe me, there are at least 2 more HPL stories I would LOVE to adapt as full-length comics.
But you need legal permission from the copyright holders of the source material, if you intend to make money from selling an adaptation.

A lot of people seem to think Lovecraft's stories are all in the public domain but that is not the case. If I remember correctly, 1923 is the cut-off point. Anything Lovecraft wrote before 1923 is in the public domain, anything he wrote after 1923 (which is almost all his best stuff) is protected by copyright.

If I just did the comics for fun and posted them online for all to see, with no intention of profiting from them, it would be legally okay. But I'm not real interested in doing that - at least not at the moment - because that is just too much work to give away for free. If I'm gonna put that much time and effort into drawing comics "on spec" - then it will be my own stories about my own characters. (for example my Wulf and Batsy comics)

Sorry for the lecture... I guess these are the tedious practical realities of doing art for a living!

Awesome-looking comic, great job.

I do find it concerning that "we were bored" was apparently sufficient reason for our protagonist and his friend to go off and start robbing tombs. Β Ah, Lovecraft.

QueenOPink [2016-06-20 21:37:55 +0000 UTC]

Great artwork, some of your best in fact. This story always kind of confused me in terms of the characterization though:

"I'm bored, Brain."
"So am I Pinky."
"So what do you wanna do tonight Brain?"
"Same thing we do every night Pinky, dig up graves like Ed Gein."

But I guess that's Lovecraft for you. He's all about the atmosphere, not the characterization or even necessarily the plot.

BryanBaugh In reply to QueenOPink [2016-06-20 22:32:46 +0000 UTC]

Well, to be fair, the story says that our two nutcase main characters had already tried exploring every form of art and entertainment to the point where they were beyond bored with it all. (Oh those haughty turn-of-the-century socialites!) So they got into grave robbing - as a form of forbidden art in itself. Basically they had both reached a point where they found the ordinary world so tedious that it took an extreme taboo, to thrill them.

Yes they were clearly amoral wackos.
BUT - it was all FOR ART!!!

Haha.

I think people tend to forget how irrational and unstable human-beings can be in real life; after all, kids desecrate graves out of boredom all the time, logic is just a foreign concept to some people.Β

The brilliant thing about Lovecraft is that when his characters lose their sanity after encountering these horrors, you have to wonder sometimes if these characters were truly sane to begin with and where we draw that line. "The Hound" is the perfect example of this.Β

QueenOPink In reply to BryanBaugh [2016-06-21 01:20:59 +0000 UTC]

This is just me, but I always thought it was a big step to go from living leisurely, decadent lifestyles to robbing graves! But it doesn't matter.Β The joy of Lovecraft for me is all in his use of language (which is inimitable, and writers who try to copy it only make themselves look like a joke,) and the atmosphere of classical horror he conveys through it. He could write a poem about a toaster and make it an atmospheric masterpiece of the macabre.

It's a beautiful, fat little volume containing several HPL stories by a variety of different, talented artists.

A chilling but karmic tale, and a solid argument as to why the dead should always be left undisturbed! I'm not much a fan of Lovecraft, but even with its supernatural element, there's a clear message to leave well enough alone, and the only real madness is that which is self-inflicted.

Having the cursed necklace stand out against the monochrome with that bright, sickly green was a good inclusion.
