Description
The Rancor from "Star Wars Episode 6: Return of the Jedi".Whenever I think of The Rancor, I always remember my little cousin Bradley. There were four of us Baugh grandkids. There was me, my sister, and my two cousins. In the summer of 1983, when "Return of the Jedi" came out, I was eleven - the oldest of the group, and Bradley was (I think) four - the youngest. During that summer I think Grandma and Grandpa Baugh must have taken us kids to see "Return of the Jedi" probably six times. And every single time, my job was to sit next to Bradley and cover his eyes during the Rancor scene. It was the only scene in the movie he was scared of, and I was the only one he trusted, to know exactly when The Rancor Scene was about to start, and exactly when it was completely over. Also, I guess if he had asked Grandma to cover his eyes that would have been sissy. But somehow asking Big Cousin Bryan to cover his eyes was okay. It was one of those very Wally Cleaver and Beaver Cleaver type situations. Anyway, it's sort of goofy, but to this day every time I watch "Return of the Jedi", somewhere in the back of my mind I can still hear Bradley's four-year-old voice saying, "Just don't forget to cover my eyes at the Rancor Scene. Just don't forget to cover my eyes at the Rancor Scene!"
Haha!

I love this series! It's turning out so well. I especially love the addition of the Gamorrean guard. Just plain awesome.

Haha, awesome!! I had 12 of these things all planned and sketched out but only had time to do 3 before I got busy with Disney obligations and comics projects and stuff. Same thing happened to my Lovecraft series. One of these days, I'll get back to 'em!

Stupid Disney getting in the way of your dreams.

I know! Argh!! To be fair working for Disney makes other kinds of dreams come true like keeping a full refrigerator, having health insurance, and being able to save up enough money to buy a house, despite the ridiculous California cost-of-living. That stuff is worth sacrificing a few personal art projects for!

Sell out.
At least your day job is still creative. I spend my day writing code and staring at databases.

Ha! Called it!
Although yes, it does look like Luke has gotten used to this sort of thing by now. The look on his face practically screams, "Oh great, here we go again...."

OHH, man! I remember this SO clearly! The scene where Oola got thrown into the pit really made me hate Jabba!
It's a good thing Luke had turned into such a badass, eh?
Oh, interesting bit of trivia - did you know the rancor's roaring is tooled from the sound of a dachshund barking?

Cool work!
With the Special Edition version of ROTJ, I still have to have someone cover my eyes - and ears - whenever the throne room musical number starts!
I, too, like the prequels, but ignore all things EU. Not a fan of the way Lucas keeps screwing with the OT, though.

I was two or three years old when I was begging for a Rancor toy, which my mother thought would be too "scary" for me, especially because I already liked Ewoks, and somehow or another she mistook the Gammorrean on the box art for a dead Ewok. Since I hadn't seen the films yet, she bought me the toy and told me a bogus story that the Rancor is kept as a pet by the Ewoks and "carries potatoes across the river for them." Really. That was her way of softening the horror.
I still knew that the Rancor was obviously a meat-eating monster that wanted to kill Luke, but being a little kid, I simultaneously believed her. It sure made the Ewoks a lot darker.
Everything about the monster was immediately appealing to me. Its entire hunched shape with those long, gnarled arms is such a gorgeous design.
The expression you gave the Gammorrean is priceless.

Haha, thanks for all those comments! I like how your mother's efforts to "lighten" the Rancor ended up "darkening" the Ewoks.

Heh heh, you should've drawn left over pieces of the Twi'lek dancer laying on the floor of the lair in the background. (just kidding)
I love it. Keep 'em coming. Can't wait to see the next one.

I found the Rancor's mournful groan, as his head goes limp and he dies, to be the most poignant moment in any Star Wars movie.
