Description
The Abtomat Kalashnikov Model 2024 or simply the AK-24 is an assault rifle developed in response to the United States small arms modernization, particularly the adoption of 6.8mm General Purpose ammunition. Adapted from Izhmash earlier AK-12 prototypes and IWI's ACE family of rifle, the weapon is major divergence from previous Russian adopted "AK" rifles. Most interesting of note is the 6.7X51mm ammunition ballistic characteristics of other .264 caliber rounds, like 6.5 Creedmoor and .260 Remington. Prototypes of the rifle were first demonstrated with 6.7mm loaded into a largely polymer-constructed case, however the Russian government found the cost of the switching to totally different style of ammunition too high and current models use standard steel-case style. While AK-24 and other 6.7mm weapons largely replaced those chambered in 7.62X39 and 7.62X54r, systems chambered in 5.45mm (like the AK-12 and RPK-74) have be retained for their lighter weight and large capacity.
The AK-24 use's the long-stroke piston gas system largely identical to the AK-47 developed in the first years after WWII. However, the platform features ambidextrous selector switch and be able to fire in semi, two-round burst, full auto like the previous AK-12 and AK-15. The new rifle's charging handle can also be switched from right to left during assembly or disassembly of the weapon on soldier level, even while in the field. The bolt is constructed with a builtin dust-shield that reciprocates with bolt travel, sealing the AK-24 from outside debris far greater than previous Russian adopted Kalashnikov rifles.
