Description
Or 89式小銃の兄 (The T-89's Big Brother)
In the late 2020's, the Japanese Defense Agency decided to develop a new rifle in accordance with the United States' 6.8mm series of squad weapons that had recently been adopted. Howa Machinery Company Ltd (豊和工業株式会社 howa kogyo kabushiki-gaisha) would later present prototype in 2032 for review by the JSDF. After several years of testing in laboratory and field conditions, the first round of troop trials was conducted in November of 2037. The first batch of rifles went to the 2nd Infantry Regiment of the Eastern Army in Niigata Prefecture. Japanese soldiers were at first put off by the heavier platform, coming closer to the Type-64 that they used during boot camp than the Type-89 that the rifle was replacing. Soon, though, they would come to appreciate the new Howa rifle for it's greater accuracy and range. It was officially adopted in 2039 as the type 39 6.8mm rifle (39式6.8mm小銃).
Based on the gas system of the Type 89, the Howa T-39 uses a non-reciprocating charging handle that can be installed on either the left or right side of the rifle. The receiver is divided into a upper and lower, both milled from an aluminum billet. The lower receiver shares a great deal of pares with SR-25 and can use 30-round US mil-spec PMags, but is issued with two Howa produced 20-round polymer magazine. In departure from US military thought, it use a keymod front hand guard as testing by the Minister of Defense concluded that the mounting system was satisfactory for the military's needs.
