Here's a concept I've been toying with. here's the background to it.

The year is 2998, Nuclear fallout swept the southern half of north America over three centuries ago, and while radiation is gone, in the wasteland left behind flora and fauna still struggle. For humanity in the southern half, Starvation and pestilence run rampant.

Finally, scientist of the Northern half begin to see the oncoming disaster as southern farmers, who supply food to the whole continent, begin having more and more trouble. as a result, a special gas is developed, to help the growth of the plant, it's completely nontoxic when indirectly ingested in crops and increases output by tenfold.

Yet there is one draw back, while consuming plants infected by the gas is harmless, skin contact with it is devastating. Due to this, all farmers using the gas have to use a special suite, which some compare aesthetically to those worn by dark ages plague doctors. due to the limited resources, the suites are very cheap, and the smallest scratch can gash open the only shield keeping you safe from the gas.

The way the gas works is simple. it shuts down the part of the plant that tells it how big to grow, how much to grow, and where to grow it. These effect carry over to anything effected with the gas. In animals, it drives them feral within hours, they go into shock, and die quickly. In humans, our higher function keeps us lasting a bit longer. At first exposure, a few bumps and rashes appear, then the swelling starts. In a week your body frame begins to be affected almost at random, yet you stay conscious At a month, your body is now monstrous, and tumors begin developing in the brain, attacking the part of your brain that allows you to function intelligently, at a month in a half, you turn into the feral beast the northerners dub as 'Flesh Golems"
