That's a beautiful snake. I own a corn snake and feed it live mice. I don't believe in the concept of feeding a pre-killed mouse to my baby, cuz nature doesn't "pre-kill" food for her beautiful predators.

Congrats on the DD. =3

LOL yes well I'm not about to let my 200+ dollar baby get scarred and maybe even killed by a 1 dollar rat. How we keep our herps is in no way natural. Zoos don't do it with tigers etc because of the risk to their animals why would I?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

YellingDragon In reply to badkittyamy [2009-06-04 22:20:41 +0000 UTC]

Ah, true. It's unfortunate tho, that we have to keep exotic animals in zoos because we destroyed their habitats and endangered them. But I suppose it's the only way to save them from extinction.

The rat was a buck? Man, the mice I buy are like over $3 dollars! I'm being scammed! D;

The comments like "Who cares its a rat, it has no fulfilling life"
Is the most un-knowledgeable statement I've ever read.

Rats bought from any store, even if called 'et rats'
Aren't any healthier then feeder rats. Maybe if you ever went
to a rodent breedery type place. You'd figure that out.

Even though snakes need to eat, I really don't think snakes should be owned
as pets. They would easily turn on you as they are un-domesticated.
But so are a lot of animals. But you can always tame most.

Snakes can not form bonds, can not perform tricks or even be taught any.
They can not cuddle, and are not sad when other snakes die.
There are many many other things that snakes can not do that clearly
show they have no fulfillment in life. Other then show and good rodent control.
That's what I think if rats don't have a life.

That's how I feel when people say rats have no purpose, even though they can
do all the stuff snakes can not.

There is so much more that I would want to say. Besides that I know its nature,
I just wish nature would stay in its place and be fed naturally. Not by human hands.
Wild rats probably live better then feeder rats. The rats that people breed for
carnivorous consumption, sick and fed un-properly. And the list goes on and on.

And now you can all excuse me as I need to go check my 6 rats in the bathtub,
and go spend time with my 4 rescue rats.

Anyway, I do have to say nice shot. I envy the professional ability to get such a shot.
But I do hate the feeling it gives me.

Congrats on the daily deviation. [rather not say DD and also this comment is to all the rat haters and blah blah blah, and the congrats of course is to the photographer xD]

So...you're upset some person said "Who cares its a rat, it has no fulfilling life"...and you turn around and talk about snakes having an unfullfilling life and how they are boring as pets? So what if they don't express emotions the same as a rat? They are still valued pets by other people and experience long, healthy, happy lives.

Your speech would have gone much better if you stopped after the first paragraph...instead you come off as an ignorant kid with huge amounts of misinformation.

You would have to read my reply to the first person above
To read everything I said.
in short
It was sarcasm, not meant for any real reason but to act just like
the person who said rats had no real reason for life. I was trying to say
basically the same things the person said about rats. Just a bit different.

Sarcasm, i guess its hard to tell online.

I know I was not being a ignorant kid, thank you

"Snakes can not form bonds, can not perform tricks or even be taught any.

Are you really comparing life fulfillment with doing tricks and being tamed?
You cannot know if the snake is sad and honestly, I've seen cats acting almost as uncaring as snakes when it comes to other cats dying. Actually what I've seen and read, most animals show little caring when their youngsters or pack members die, except with "higher species", elephants and so on.
They are animals and it's not really beneficial for lone predators to angst over something in nature, but it doesn't mean their life has no fulfillment.

And heck, you can teach TURTLES and FISH tricks. Yet many fish or turtles don't cuddle, look sad or form bonds. This would imply that snakes could be able to learn tricks, except that they don't have ears to hear commands or any limbs so the array of tricks you could teach them would be pretty small.

Acting like a human =/= more life fulfillment.

I just want to reply to something you said:

Actually what I've seen and read, most animals show little caring when their youngsters or pack members die, except with "higher species", elephants and so on.

I've had LOTS of pets [fish, rats, cats, dogs, etc.] and one of my gerbils died about a year ago, and my other gerbil was seriously depressed for about 6 months.. I had to feed him, otherwise he wouldn't eat, he would sleep ALL day, didn't exercise at all and just kind of.. laid there o_o I got really worried.
Same thing happened with my dog when they took away my other dog [lol], same thing with my cat.. AND my fish D: So I dunno about what you just said.. or maybe my animals are a bit weird lol.

Anyway, about the picture:

AWESOME much? It's a great shot, but I feel sorry for the rat ;_; although I know lots of snakes eat rats, it still makes me a little sad to see this.
Great job on the picture, though

NightmareHound In reply to Eliwi [2009-06-10 21:53:44 +0000 UTC]

Well I was concidering more of "untamed" animals, that snakes were compared here. Or at least I can't remember hearing that lions or moles or reptiles would show much emotional distress if their pack members or young died.

Eliwi In reply to NightmareHound [2009-06-10 22:51:43 +0000 UTC]

I've heard of zebras showing a lot of emotional distress because their young died D: [actually I saw a documentary about it once], but that's about it.

Don't doubt it at all. Animal psychology is something that's mysterious (and I have no television so I could be lacking information).
It might be because I mentioned cats in the sentence, but who can say that cats are tamed ;D

WolvenYoukai In reply to NightmareHound [2009-06-04 02:29:47 +0000 UTC]

I was mostly taking the opinion of certain people who said 'It's just a rat, it has no reason for life fulfillment.' Basically trying to show how most rat lovers would think against the snake lovers.

I was pointing the comment of that towards comments of others with that kind of point.
Saying that rats did not have a life fulfillment. Which would mean that nothing had a life fulfillment

It was the fact that the person thought that just because they hated the animal, didn't mean it DIDN'T have a life fulfillment.

I know the snakes are just as highly intelligent as rats I probably should of put more emphasize on sarcasm with the peoples comments.

Two in two cages. And then a rabbit cage xD

My precious dumbo sisters died two months ago.
The first died of cancer and age, which really made me feel crappy.
And her sister who was my fat rat. Was put down after a tumor in her brain exploded.
That was the hardest day I've ever had. I've never put a animal down before that.

Yeah, I remember when I had to put my cat down for a ruptured lung. I knew that once the issue came up, it had to be done and there was no question about that (he was suffering too much; no need to prolong it), but letting him go with the vet and having to walk away knowing that I'd never see him again was the hardest thing I've ever had to do in my life.

I've never had the opportunity to talk to anyone else about who has went through the same thing!

Yeah..., whenever I think about my little kitty, and his face looking back at me as I walked out, my heart just crushes... I miss him so much. I lost him in December 2007, but had raised him from a little kitten and he was only three-years old when he had to be put down. I still cry for him all the time...

WolvenYoukai In reply to Cup-of-Javo [2009-06-06 01:36:48 +0000 UTC]

Aww he died so young
You wouldn't think that a rat would give you a 'look'
But when I handed Oonezumi to my vet tech to be put down. She seriously gave me this big eyed look...not taking her eyes off me. I'm hoping she was thinking 'I understand mommy' Or something like that..

That look from her made me have a panic attack and I almost past out in the vet bathroom...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Cup-of-Javo In reply to WolvenYoukai [2009-06-08 03:15:29 +0000 UTC]

It is sad...to have a bond like that severed. But you know that she was happy with you, the time that you did have together. You took good care of her and did all that you could've done. She isn't suffering any more and I'm sure she, in her own little rat way, thanks you for that hard decision that had to be done...

I think that's one of the things that hurts the most. Knowing that there's nothing you could've done to change it. I keep beating myself up over, everything from "I shouldn't have taken him to the vet and I would have never found out!" to "I should've noticed earlier." (The thing was, my kitty's lungs were secretly filling up with mucus, and he was a healthy cat, he just tired all the time, so we thought he had asthma or something so we took him to the vet. One thing led to another. It ended up being the mucus [we never knew], so they suggested that they tap his lungs to take it out. When they tried to tap it, his lungs were so scarred by the fluids that they just collapsed, so that's when they had to put him down.) Everything bad that could've happened just did. But I have to keep telling myself that I tried my darn hardest and I couldn't have changed anything. But that's what hurts me the most, not the fact that I lost him, but the fact that I had to lose him. Because if I could've, I would've done anything to have Runey back in a heartbeat. I know you would've done the same for Oonezumi, and anyone else who ever had to put down their companions.

Oonezumi's a really pretty name by the way. I've never heard anything like it...

This is soooo hard to talk about. Every time I reply, I grow sad. Did you ever get a new rat after Oonezumi?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WolvenYoukai In reply to Cup-of-Javo [2009-06-08 23:24:53 +0000 UTC]

Wow, thats really sad to hear what happened to Runey Really hard to hear almost.
But you were just doing the best you could

Yeah you can always wish you hadn't done something, even if you know it was for the best.

At the time I lost Oonezumi and Kumori I had 6 others. [they were a rescue that continuously had babies before I could separate them, though I finally got it under control]
And a month after losing them I rescued 4 more. So it's not like I lost all rat 6 interaction. But how I got the two girls really meant a lot to me. I bought them from a excellent breeder. With my own money, and with my own plans.

Thanks, Oonezumi is the japanese word for rat I really liked it so I chose that, no matter how ironic it was
