I guess if I automatically like this picture I'm a terrible person.
Maturity people, I only found a few you actually dealt with this with mind.
It's a beautiful picture of life itself.
And this is a rat lover speaking, so I guess this means I should go burn on the grill with a hamburger.

Snakes were domesticated way before rats ever where. They were kept to worship in South America for millions of years. Rats were finally domesticated after the plague ended.
Certain snakes have heat sensors, and usually that triggers their attacking which will get them to eventually eat. When it's frozen they might not get interested in the animal.
and the rats reptile owners buy are really pet suitable, either aggressive or wild. And, the rats reptile owners buy are really pet suitable, either aggressive or wild.
I own rats, I love them with all my heart, they are my babies and I care for them. But, I understand other animals need to eat. It may be morbid but people just need to understand the fact. You can't assume that who ever does live feed a terrible person, that's just being immature.
So sorry if this offends anyone, if you don't like it don't comment. It's easy as that really.

Actually you know live feeding can be dangerous to the snake because sometimes they decide to fight back?
And I've spoken to snake owners who feed pre-killed rats and they have no problem eating them.

People don't realise that snakes also eat dead animals... they'll take any chance for a good meal, especially if it is easy and requires minimal stress.
If someone's argument is that they feed live because it's natural, then they should not bother treating the snake for ticks or internal parasites, because that's "natural" too. So is letting the snake die from its wounds when a mouse decides to fight back, because gosh darn it, that happens in the wild too!
I've always believed that if a person has animals in captivity, they have a moral responsibility to take care of those animals. One of the responsibilities is to minimise suffering. That's why we give pets medications for parasites, regardless if it is "natural" or not. So too not letting the animals having to suffer the agony of being eaten alive.
Some things are just best left in the wild. We can't control what happens in nature, but we can control what happens in captivity.

This pic should be banned from this site. It's distasteful and offensive and makes fun of another creature's suffering and death. If that was a human being killed then this pic would have been banned on day one. There's no need for this kind of snuff porno here. Rats make super intelligent awesome pets and we shouldn't have to put up with seeing other people inflicting animal abuse on them. There's absolutely nothing natural about putting a snake in with a rodent that is not native to its environment in a glass enclosure giving the rat no chance to escape. Anyone who supports this is a sick motherfucker!!!

Wrong, he had a choice when he photographed the suffering of an animal and then put it all over the internet for people's exploitative entertainment.

How do you know the animal wasn't already dead? Stop being a pussy. No one says anything when some dumb ass takes pictures of kittens. Getting in their face, flashing lights at them. Which is known to cause hysteria in small kittens.

Flashing lights in a kitten's face is animal abuse, if you're calling this animal abuse. I don't see you harping on people who photo the cute kittens. Grow a spine and get over it.

xyzxyz2000 In reply to AssClownFish [2010-05-13 05:39:42 +0000 UTC]
Your logic can be turned around just as easily: if you care so much about a trivial issue like shining lights in kitten's eyes, why not care about this which is 500 times worse? Here the animal actually suffered and died. As for getting over it, funny how everything is easy to get over, as long as it's not happening to you. If you were being killed for entertainment you'd cry to high heaven and quite quickly lose your "spine", as well as soil your pants.

DON'T TAKE A PHOTO OF YOUR BABY EATING A HAM SANDWICH. IT'S CRUEL TO PIGS.
Seriosly. Grow a backbone. You see this shizz on wildlife programs all the time which were... dare I say it... made for ENTERTAINMENT (and education or course.)

AssClownFish In reply to xyzxyz2000 [2010-05-13 17:34:43 +0000 UTC]
How is this worse? Who is to say the rat isn't already dead? An animal doesn't have to be alive to look like that. You're a hypocrite. If you think it's trivial to flash lights in kitten's faces, when it could cause hysteria, then you have no right to say anything negative about this. Personally, I don't give two shits about kittens, or these animals here. It's hypocrites like you that annoy me. I say get over it, because it's not the same thing as being tortured. This is indicative of a natural process. If you've ever watched the discovery channel, or read a text book on animals, then you're guilty. Or if you've ever enjoyed a nice hamburger or steak. You're no different.

Actually, I don't care about my own skin. You don't know me, so you're the judgmental one saying such. I care about some animals, but I don't whine and bitch about mistreatments like THIS, yet let other mistreatments go unnoticed. I fucking hate cats, but I feel it's wrong to shove a camera in their face. Stop being so single minded.

Quite a bitch session here, well done making people argue over a photo. I think this is excellent, shows the snake doing what it does best and most of all doing it naturally. You can't feel sorry for the rat, I bet half the people here don't feel sorry for the steak on their dinner plate, or the pork roast cooking in the oven

Lechensko In reply to DrewHopper [2009-10-10 11:33:29 +0000 UTC]
I'd feel sorry for any animal capable of feeling pain that is forced into an enclosure, and has to suffer the anxiety/pain of being eaten alive when it's not really necessary.
It's not about the photo, really. That rat was dead already.
I'm more concerned about the lack of respect people have for "prey animals". Some people here obviously see them as objects.
If it were a puppy being fed live, would you feel sorry for it?

i agree with points from both sides of the argument - yes, it is cruel to dump a living thing in a cage to be eaten even if it was bred for that but if that is what the people at the pet shop told him/her to do i guess it isn't really her fault maybe she could just try asking the shopkeeper for the petshop if it matters either way and if it makes no difference to the frog she could try feeding it dead stuff. makes sense? yes, yes it does.

I think it's nice. It is nature, no doubt about it, it;s just the same as if a human were to be eating meat. It's no big deal.
the quality of this photo is great, as well! I really love those yellow snakes... So beautiful.

Way to criticize the natural order of things, that has been occurring long before you where even born.
It's the death of a creature, and the life it gives the snake. It's all part of the circle, and the photographer was lucky enough to catch it on film.
You may never be mature enough to fully understand.

You speak of maturity? You remind me of a 5 year old who gets his jollies pulling the wings off butterflies. No, you lack even the most basic test of maturity, which is the ability to have empathy or compassion for other living things who are suffering. Instead you apparently derive psychopathic pleasure from such things. Crawl back into your hole you twisted, disgusting piece of human filth.

Wow. You don't even know me.
I'm the kind of person who would never hurt a living creature.
If I accidentally step on an insect, It makes me fell bad. If somebody spots a spider inside, and scream "Kill it!" I pick it up, and let it outside, where it is safer. I don't know where you get off calling me "Human Filth" And criticism my Maturity? Calling me, Who you don't know, Human Filth?
I merely said how animals eating other animals, is part of the natural order of things, And it has been going on way longer than man kind came along and fucked everything up.
Before you go criticizing others, Maybe you should think about the things you may have said or done. Me, I know I have done wrong in my life, But I try to atone for my mistakes. Also, If you have such obviously strong opinions, Maybe you should keep them to yourself.

Um hello? You were the first to come out swinging with the insults several months after I posted the original message. You don't know me either, yet rather than respecting my opinions you criticized them and said I lacked maturity. What kind of response did you expect?
If you're the kind of gentle person you claim to be, then surely you can understand the fact that I don't like people taking joy in feeding live animals to their snakes. Taking a picture celebrating the act is distasteful. From many of the messages posted here, including the photographers, it's clear they have no respect for the animal being killed, instead they see it only as sick "entertainment". If you go to youtube there are hundreds of videos where people are feeding live while laughing sadistically in the background. I think that reflects the general mentality of snake owners, and live feeders especially. Anyone who feeds live when so many better, safer alternatives exist is clearly in it only for the blood sport entertainment aspect.
I don't know why people feel compelled to own snakes given you can't pet them and they aren't smart enough to love you back, but if people must own them, why do they:
a) have to feed live animals to their snake and
b) have to post pics and videos of the act on the internet for sick jollies?
There is no way to defend either of the above.
In terms of keeping my beliefs to myself, you can forget about that as long as freaks like this aren't keeping their cruelty to themselves and instead posting it on the internet to get a rise out of people. Voicing my beliefs is the only way I can change the world and stand up for those who have no voice such as poor animals. Someone has to point out the injustice perpetrated against the millions of poor rodents being tortured and killed in the snake food industry, being tested on in labs, being caught in sticky traps and so on... Feeding live should be made illegal and I'm going to do everything I can in the future to push for laws that make it so.
