Build by the Fantastic Four teamleader Reed Richards as a companion for interdimensional missions and originally to find Galacatus the first version was called Highly Engineered Robot Built for Interdimensional Exploration shortened into the nickname H.E.R.B.I.E. Besides his trips to space and other dimensions Herbie became the trusted labpartner of Reed. After the birth of his children Herbie was rechristned H.E.R.B.E.R.T. to reflect his change of duties: he stayed at the Baxter Building full time and instead of space and others dimensions he explored the responsabilities of Education, Raising and Teaching superpowered kids.
A grown up Franklin and Valeria from an alternate dystopian timeline arrived warning about a dark secret of Reed. After his death and the founding of the Future 5, the teenage daughter Valeria assumed the mantle of the teams lead scientist and his rank in the top 5 smartest people on earth.
She rebuild Herbert and also designed an exosuit he could "put on" for heavy-duty jobs. Therfor it was based on designs of The Makers (evil Reed) robots called U.T.E.N.S.I.L. Ultra Technical Nullifier of Sential Intelligent Lifeforms which he used to control mankind with, Valeria figured the exosuited Herbert could also be used as a combatant and reserve member of the Future 5. Later on she would use her own designs to craft herself an amour.
