Description experiment in light and tone.. good fun but I really could use three more things..... a model ( other than myself ) , lessons in converting colour to B&W and an extra fill flash.. still little steps...

Absolutely NOTHING wrong with the model you're currently using. May make it a bit diff to take the desired pics that you want but you have all that is required for a good model and photographer. Keep up the good work. I enjoy your pics.

Self portrait is always hard to take anyway, this is a very nice try. Keep it up!

Hey, got here via someone's fav list just putting on the nerd hat because you wanted to know some things. Hope you don't mind.
Some quick comments on some image editing things and such in Photoshop CS. Note that I'm using the German version so some things may be called something slightly different... the shortcuts ought to be the same though.

- desaturating/black&white conversion: You can either actually desaturate the image by draining the colour via shortcut CTRL+shift+U (image > adjust > reduce saturation) OR follow =wolfskin 's suggestion and try Image > Mode > Greyscale

- post-processing
-- lighting: To increase the luminosity, duplicate the image layer (layer > duplicate layer) and switch the blend mode from Normal to Screen. If it's too light, simply reduce the opacity and/or use a very soft, big brush (in this photo about the size of your face - I suggest an opacity of around 20% for greater control) to get more contrast into it. The Levels dialogue (ctrl+L) can also help here. The left-hand box is to deepen the shadows (5-10 is usually good) and the right-hand one to increase the luminosity (try 245). Tick and untick the preview box to see the difference and just play around with it

-- sharpening: Do .not. use the sharpening tool. It's evil Try duplicating the layer and using the high-pass filter (Filters > Other Filters > High-pass) on about 10. Switch the blending mode of the layer to Hard Light and reduce the opacity until you're satisfied with the sharpness. Click on the eye next to the layer to make it invisible and show you the difference. You should check the result viewing the image at 100% as sharpness (as well as smoothness) can be quite different in the actual size than when you're viewing a shrunk version.

Hope that helps!

Photoshop CS ( only loaded tonight ) prior to that just PS7. Basically I just bring up hue and saturation and drain the colour..

I'm using PS7 so I'm not sure if it's the same deal in CS, but if you want to convert a photo to B&W, then Image>Mode>Grayscale is the best way to do it. Desaturation tends to lower image quality (ie. make it grainier) in the process of taking away the colour.
