It's obvious that you haven't hung around any rural Alabama airstrips.. Back in the 1990's I had a friend nearby who NEVER flew sober. EVER. You can bet your bottom dollar that I NEVER went ANYWHERE with him. Back then, I was young and bored, and, unlike SOME people, the beach was not nearby. So I hung around with a bunch of old pilots. One particular day, this fellow, "Jerry," decided he wanted to fly from Eutaw to Tuscaloosa to go to a "party." Wasted as usual, he departed runway 34 that afternoon, heading for a 20 minute trip to TCL. In his haste to leave, he forgot to check his fuel. In an airplane, the gauges are not sufficient; one MUST visually inspect the tanks prior to takeoff. He got about 15 miles out, never climbing above 500 feet, then ran out of fuel in a heavily wooded area. Seeing that he could not get to a suitable landing zone, Jerry chose the biggest, tallest Southern Pine and stalled the aircraft into the top of the tree. The plane was in the tree top, undamaged; Jerry climbed down the tree. When the FAA got there he was trying to bury all the beer cans that spilled out when he opened the door! The plane was recovered by a Skycrane helicopter, and Jerry continued flying. He made money by carrying skydivers aloft. And here is the irony: he died in a FIVE (5) mile per hour fender bender at the grocery store. All true from beginning to end.
