Description
She may be ugly as sin and she may be slow and lack fuel-reserves but this lady has teeth. She's not like your aggressors or defenders, not like your air-superiority-fighters, bombers or escorts; she's built to last. This lady's looking for a fight! The Brawler was the federation's first dedicated gunship well before the later Avenger and Punisher classes but when the battles turned fiercer and more often than not, the enemy sent entire swarms of drones out to overwhelm their defenses; the federation then decided to resurrect their old workhorse.
Compared to the later era gunships, Brawlers are severely lacking in speed and range but they are extremely durable and maneuverable and their lack of defensive-turrets are well made up for by their ability to all too easily turn over and shift direction as well as an impressive complement of missile-bays. Because of their reputation for all too easily overreaching their weapon's ranges and many of their blasts going wild, they are fairly useless in any defensive roles because they are just as likely to hit friendly targets, but Brawlers excel at jumping from one fortified location to another, picking up fuel and ammunition before speeding off again - they make excellent patrol-aircraft and quite excellent at search-and-destroy missions, capable of out-gunning and outlasting most enemy drones.
Typically launched in groups of three to five, they usually don't fly in formation, to avoid friendly-fire incidents and will fan out over large areas and they have lately been upgraded with more advanced sensors since it makes sense that a very durable aircraft may want to stay within the battle-theater long enough to deliver valuable intel for other, ranged attacks and this also lends itself to a much higher level of lethal precision when attacking entrenched targets.
The Brawler gunship lives up to its name in every way imaginable as its not uncommon to see them limping back to base, missing large portions of their fuselage or airfoils only to have new components plugged in, in record time giving them a fierce reputation and an often scarred and battered appearance to boot. As long as the pilot's compartment in the middle of the fuselage remains relatively intact, the rest of the plane is incredible easy to repair and they have many, redundant systems, making for a very tight bundle of engines and powerful weapons, always coming back for more.
Edit: I realized I uploaded the wrong version of this plane; you're probably never going to see a Brawler gunship look quite as pristine as that version... so yeah; I had some fun adding battle-scars.
Canonically, it didn't make sense to keep these planes looking all prime and pristine when they see such frequent combat-scenarios; they may be ugly and scarred, but they get the job done.
Edit II: So while I was away for a bit, I had this on my laptop and kept staring at it, realizing that I had missed a few things so now that I'm home for a little bit, I just had to fix this stuff....
