I'm starting to get the hang of it Just picked up a few LED torches from local cheapo shop for $3, they have 7 LEDs and are a bit brighter than the usual crappy ones you see around. I like the sound of the rig
Lens is broken i think

i think its just my composition that makes it look that way.. damn hard to line up horizontal/vertically with the distortion!

we used to do this in art school with the Kodak wratten gels and strobe flash , and achieve same effect similar to Night Photographer dot com

thats probably the first place i saw it done too. i've been trying to get the free gel lighting samples off Rosco lighting for over a year without any success definitely better than cello lol.
what was it like doing it with film?

I worked in a State's Public safety dept, and we had to go out at night an paint with light night scenes to show the path of damage a car wreck made to its final resting point and from its initial impact point
On film we used Kodacolor Pro VHC 160 and for lighting 2 Norman 200 B's ..and because outdoors at night under mercury vapor lamps made everything turn gold we had to filter the flash w CC 25 blue ...and then with camera on tripod and held down by sand bags and on a fluid pan head for anti vibration shock...control we would then light a total night scene 350 feet deep by 40 feet wide or more ..each on one side of the road and pop the flash every 10 paces
The camera's ultimate exposure was usually F 8/11 and time about 4 minutes
I have tried to do simple light painting w flash and modern dslr and its tricky as the longer the exposure the more shadow noise there is...and some cameras dont have bulb only max exp time of 30 seconds so I needed to get a Nikon D1x ..and later D2x for such timed exposures to work...D2 does better but -7 ev and try and keep exposure under 1 min is best

Cool. That sounds a lot like what they used to(and still do) do with crime scenes, definitely an interesting technique! Its great how you use a cooler filter to conteract/balance the warm lighting.. something not many would consider now using digital.
Yeh my crop sensored DSLR suffers badly from noise compared to the full frame(35mm equivalent) i'm using now

Alembic-Lynx In reply to CainPascoe [2009-09-20 09:18:02 +0000 UTC]
Well I dont have a full frame ....But the newer and later 12 megapixel Nikon does exceptionally well at ISO 200 and in exposure ranges time wise of 90 secs or less...But it does not have the latitude of film for full painting w light scenes, as I think on C41 process we modified our developer too, to compensate for the green shadows by adding either extra hydroquinone, to the primary developer, or hydroxyl sulfate to the bleaching process

So all the colors are just from you lighting stuff with your cell phone?
If so, holy smokes! That's amazingly awesome and ridiculous!
I love how each room has it's own color... I thought you used a ton of effect lights or something

Haha its good fun too I'm using an LED torch as my phone died(which i think was brighter than the torch actually!) Cheers man!

Cellophane is a very thin sheet of plastic, transparent but coloured. You can get a wide variety from arts and crafts stores, newsagents, etc. So when you shine a torch through it makes a huge coloured light.
Doing all this with a cellphone would have been impressive though

Wow, I totally misread cellophane for cellphone last night... in my defence, the words are only different by two letter, and he has used a cellphone to light stuff in the past
