the peach is wrinkled
soft
too soft
under his fingers
under his tree
he digs his fingers into the rotting flesh
and relishes the feeling
sweetness dripping in his palm
dripping in the humid air
trapped under the
sweeping boughs
laden heavy with flat, wide leaves
green tongues
lapping at the sunbeams
round, ripe fruit
loosely gyrating on their stems
he lets the fruit drop
from his tired fingers
and it rolls to its fallen brethren
he breathes in the scent of dead flowers
and closes his eyes.
the orchard waits for him
and he sighs.
peach tree,
full and fluid branches
reaching for the sky
the peach tree
exhales
alongside him
and together
they wait for winter.
