“Petra? Yes, there’s a reason she talks very little about her past. When asked, she usually changes the subject, or gives some vague response… that she’s from the east. She’s known Johanna a very long time. She has family, but she does not miss them.

Petra is unique. Her family was… different. Perhaps they’re still alive, perhaps not. I would suspect they still are, from what Petra has shared about them. Her family was less of a family and more of a tribe. Though “tribe” seems a crude word… society, perhaps, would be more appropriate.

They called themselves Nusandra. I believe it translates to ‘daughters of the moon’ in her native tongue. They were so unlike the rest of us, they didn’t even speak the same language. They considered it too dirty, not pure enough. Within their culture they spoke only the ancient tongue, lost to all but these strange cats.

And their society was entirely female, except for the chosen males of the royal family. The males, still, had very little power beyond breeding rights. The females did everything… the hunting, the fighting, the defending of the borders and care of the young and elderly. Their advances in medicine and aptitude for fighting were closely guarded secrets. Every kit began training when they were old enough to walk, and by the time they were six months old they were already deadly.

The Nusandra were run by a matriarchy, passed from mother to daughter for countless generations. The Queen--or Rey--would breed only once, and her firstborn daughter would be raised as the Heir Apparent, the next matriarch after her mother before her. The Heir Apparent would receive the most vigorous training of all, until her skills were unmatched. Only then would she ascend and replace the Queen.

The Queen of the Nusandrans was Surna Rey. And when Surna Rey finally bore her first and only litter, her firstborn was indeed a female. On the day of her birth, under the full moon, she was dubbed the Heir Apparent and granted a name.

They named her Petra. In their tongue it means "promised."

But Petra was the Nusandra’s last Heir Apparent. She would have taken the throne if not for Johanna. Petra saved Johanna’s life, and chose to leave her family and accompany Johanna on her journey rather than be the next matriarch of the Nusandra.

I sometimes wonder what happened to the Nusandrans, and to Surna Rey. I wonder what would have happened if Petra stayed. She would have been queen by now, I suspect. If you look at her, you can still see it… that lineage. She is the daughter of a queen. She is from the blood of ancients. She is royalty.

She is Petra Rey.”

I could not believe this song exists when I first heard it. I couldn't believe a theme song was actually already written for Petra. It blew my mind. It's so good. Please listen to it.

I'm also realizing I never gave background on any of the Jericho NPCs. Hopefully I'll change that, little by little, by doing pieces like this.
