it just takes a bit of practice to train your eye to notice negative space
a great way to do this with digital art in particular is to draw a solid silhouette first and then work into it with your mid-tones and highlights etc.
Otherwise with traditional drawing, look at a photo and draw an outline around the main form and then also working into it
