"Are we safe with the captain at the wheel?" asks little Marta. Her mother patted her hand, "Oh dear, of course! We'll be in New York very soon." And then looking as if seeing a far-off memory she added, "These storms can bring up all sorts of things long forgotten on the ocean floor, but we are quite safe!"
Marta still felt worried. Captain had left the wheelhouse saying he needed to go below deck to close portholes, but that sounded funny; she was sure the portholes were up top. She put her hand on the stair's handrail and peered into the depths. It was very dark and smelled of gin. She could image all sorts of things.
It was beginning to feel like a very long time when there came a peculiar sound from below, first a cry and then an awful rending of steel, the wet slap of balked canvas upon unlashed spars, and then up the stairs came the first of the tentacles...
