Description
Well, heres a simple guide covering splines and nurbs in 3D apps. It isnt a tutorial as such, more of a reference guide and demonstration of the power of these simple functions.Images from Cinema4D, thrown together in Photoshop.

Cool guide, your big fan says.... ;D
I shall look at it when I would start creating 3D work and install Cinema4D.

Is a hypernurb what C4D calls subdivision?
Also, I'm surprised you included nothing about how to birail curves into surfaces

hypernurbs is liquid subdivision, meaning you can keep changing the subdivision on the fly and (within sensible limits) it wont put any extra load on the comp. its also got a separate setting for both the editor and renderer, and it also smooths rather nicely rather than just subdividing and leaving the polygons where they are. the app has a number of different subdivision and smoothing functions too tho, and of course the effect doesnt have to be applied to the entire object at once.
i just wanted to deal with the basics in this one. theres no birail tool in c4d (and im not even sure how youd go about doing that, never had to myself) so i think it falls under the loft nurbs. if i do more tutorials ill do more step by step stuff, but this one will remain as just a beginners reference guide.

Hmm... that doesn't sound any different than what maya calls subdivision, but I suppose I'd just have to try it to see the difference.

ive only used maya for 5 mins before deciding i hated the interface, so i dunno. c4d has separate 'prebaked' and 'on the fly' subdivision, so i spose hypernurbs is the on the fly one.

Haha, yep 5 minutes will do it for most people. Unfortunately according to my school maya is most widely used in the visual effects industry, and moreover, it's the most difficult to use (the idea being you learn to use the hardest one the best and the rest will come more easily). Though I haven't really used any other programs much, I have to say after using maya's ridiculous interface for such a long time it really starts to make sense

yea its kinda taken over from lightwave now, although i dont really get why. c4d is making inroads tho, more and more studios are taking it up, mostly cos of pyrocluster i think.
i dont think that idea really applies to mayas interface hehe. its so wildly different that its gotta be just as hard to move from it to another app as the other way around. and, you know, you even get used to sewage if you spend enough time around it
