(Meh, I think it allows for a challenge and skills to be devolved.
but I really have to have a solid idea going in.
would much rather do my own characters.

That's nice. I'm working on an original idea of my own right now. I plan on uploading it sometime this week. What kind of project are you working on?

Oh, you're going to school for animation, right? That's cool! I'm actually a self-taught artist. I read books on storyboarding, character layouts, character designing, etc. I also learned from watching cartoons from when I was a kid to, well, right now! The many cartoons I watched throughout my life inspired my designs. Do you have any inspirations?

that i am. i love it a lot.
that can be pretty great, if you’re into life drawing i know a number of great textbooks that help aid
in general growth.
Phineas and Ferb and Smother Brothers mainly.
P&F inspired my love of animation and the comedic possibilities that could be expressed in a show.
and Smother brothers - well they’re a set of comidies that basically founded the concept of comedy music

I would love to learn more about life drawing. I also like Phineas and Ferb! It's a pretty funny and interesting show. Honestly, the cartoon that inspired me the most was MLP:FiM. I really like how, despite the look and feel, the actual show didn't venture down the girly stereotypes (like the past gens) and gave something for everyone to enjoy. I think MLP is one of the shows that defines what animation really is and that is using characters, story, and, well, anything to bring everyone together.
This is something brought up when I was a kid. When I was younger, me and my family would rent an animated movie like Chicken Run or Monsters Inc. from Hollywood Video and would watch it together. That's something I miss growing up.
I'm sorry! Started babbling a bit didn't I lol That's something I hope to do with my project though. Bring everyone together to enjoy something. Kind of like how Disney does it, you know?

i’m currently away from my text books but i return in three days , id be happy to send you
the textbooks i use . they are college level but that doesnt mean they arent worth going out of the way to get.
finding life drawing sessions as well.
i find poses between 30 seconds to 3 minutes works best for me but some people prefer it longer.
theres something to be admired in the set up of a show like P&F . the clever writing and firm understanding of comedic gags are
best visible in the early seasons but they really shine when the characters are in emotional or mortal danger.
i could honestly go on forever about the show . theres just - so much there.
i have seen a few episodes of FIM , mostly because Laura Faust is Craig Mccraickens wife and i admire both of them ,
most of their shows growing up were among my favourites. Craig currently just wrapped up Wander over yonder and i gotta say its one
of my favourite shows for colour balance and character design. i think he said it was inspired by Yellow Submerine (the song or the short animation for it - i don’t remember which )
i’m a fan of dark characters that tend to lack a formal backstory but rather drive off the idea of their negative relations with others.
so my first and one of only three episodes i ever really watched - were starlight glimmers. i did take a look over some early discord out of curiosity to
just how much the staff were allowed to do. i was not disappointed.
its a solid show with a lot of background information that i kinda love,
and the fact there are moving horses / ponies in mainly proper fashion in a show animated in Flash. amazes me.
something certainly to be admired . can’t say I’ve gotten to know the characters well enough for any of your other points though.
most of those films you mentioned i actually grew up watching as well. i think Chicken run and by exertion Walis and Gromit are my favourite films that studio produced.
we got them from blockbuster or teletoon. i think Space Jam- for some stupid reason - was one of my favourite films. the animation with real life actors appealed -
then i discovered Who Framed Rodger Rabbit and kinda ditched Space jam. heh .
my eventual goal is television animation,
i wanna be a show creator. i love the idea of world building and just this sense that these characters might as well be alive.
its pretty amazing.
recently i had the pleasure of watching Inkwell cartoons (they are trippy as heck but good )
the early years of animation are quite the treat, this sort of direct presence between an animator and their creation.
i wish there were a way to make that work in- actually - - that gives me a loose idea

Oh you don't have to send me textbooks. I usually get the joy out of learning by going to the library or looking up tutorials online. Thanks though! I love Craig McCracken's work. From shows like Dexter's Lab, Foster's, Powerpuff Girls, and Wander over Yonder (which totally bummed me out when Disney decided to end it). I remember Space Jam too! I like the movie because as a kid, I thought it was pretty cool that they were able to mix live action and animation. When I watch it now though, I didn't realize how cheesy it was at times lol I want to be a show creator too! I'm actually working on a project right now. I'm starting off making comics, but I hope in the future get to turn them into animated tv series. Are you working on any original ideas of your own?

/lol
/you’ve reeled me into and i’m hooked
/yeah , the computer i use is about six years old and probably riddled with viruses
/i figure as result it’s just barely hanging on
/suprised it hasn’t gone belly up yet
/i’ve even tried gutting out the old programming but its just
not sinking the right way
/either way i’ve got videos ready and prepped for the next few weeks
so i can settle into school but may was a mild problem and i needed to plan ahead for
it as well
/long story short - it did not work out that way
/thanks, i used a model reference but had to adjust the leg a little
otherwise it looked like an arrow to the knee
which --actaully --
actually that’s a funny concept -
i’m probably going to get on that but just as a loose sketch
/how are your classes going

she'd be proud
- oh man sounds like you're in need of a new one
but at least you were still able to make videos
your work is definitely improving!!
- classes are going fine! my next semester starts next month
it's a lot of 3D modeling and 3D animation this year and it's hard but i'm slowly getting to grips with it
here's hoping you'll enjoy yours

/ maybe ...
/yeah its a terrible old thing
but i’m going to leave for school in less than a week
which means i have the adavatage of finally using something other than
photoshop CS4 to paint and animate with (i am not kidding )
/that’ll be weird
/and a good tablet too
/i have a wacom bamboo board
/you really think so?
/i feel like a lot of my art is -- static--
and lacks orginality
still trying to come to grips with the fact i’m developing a style slowly
and not just ‘drawing anime ‘ as my friends have put it
/i don’t know -- where they got that idea from -
but its there -in their heads /and its wrong
/i love western animation more myself
that sounds like so much fun!! very jealous
my first has a lot of basicish - stuff - well not basic just
more easy going and fun stuff in my opinion
animation history , life drawing , layout (which again i suck at )
ect

- ooc; sounds like a good way to expand your artistic arsenal then! it's always good to have knowledge in different software and such
- but yeah, i definitely wouldn't say your art was 'anime', i feel it has a much more western vibe to it which is honestly refreshing
anime is great but there's only so much of it i can take!!!
i'm quite the sucker for western animation too, i'm actually in the middle of an animated fleischer-style undyne after i scribbled her in that style and got attached ahaha
- i did in my first year too, it's important to learn foundations and principles and refresh yourself on certain things before building on it

/i couldn’t agree more
/i’ve wanted to use better equipment since about a year after i got this stuff ,
i’m glad i kept it sure - i’ve really improved thanks to it
/but i think i’ve gotten what i can out of this version
/i wanna work with good stuff
/like Toonboom
/i had dabbled in Blender for one project in high school --
you can imagine how much spazzing the software had
/thanks
honestly it baffles me sometimes that people confuse the two
/than again i suppose not a lot of people watch it - sure there’s a minority but
even within that they compare the styles too much
/assuming big eyes and hands eqauls anime -
/meanwhile there are literally hundreds if not thousands of different cartoon signs
ranging from early DC style to the more simplified Charlie Brown style
/it works really well for you
/honestly i kinda look up to your art
/it’ll be fun, i’m just hoping that traditional isn’t dead and gone once i get to working
/i mean - i’m aiming for television so here’s to hoping but- it hasn’t been looking all that great
for traditional .
/so true
/say i keep hearing about the animators Survival Guide
and wondering if its a thing that people learning actaully use
/was it ever one of your textbooks

strongfish In reply to captive-creative [2016-12-31 16:43:20 +0000 UTC]
- ooc; toonboom can be tricky but it's honestly a good way forward, i'm sire you'll use it
as for blender, it has a pretty awful rep amongst the 3D industry! i'd highly recommend switching to autodesk maya, it's industry standard aside from in-house 3D modeling programs and you can get the student version for free
- i think a lot of people don't see things the same way as those who've been to art school, things are a lot more black and white when you haven't had that scope
i'd brush off their comments and carry on drawing how you like and developing your style, a few people calling it anime doesn't make it so
people put things in boxes even when they have little understanding - and anime is based on western animation and disney anyway so joke's on them
- i won't lie, traditional is very much on its way out and isn't really used outside of individual projects in the industry, it's just sotime consuming and the workload is so intense it is't efficient or cost effective anymore
that said, i think freelance is probably better! youtube animators no doubt earn more than those working in a stressed, busy studio struggling to get dailies done and redoing scenes five times over
the animator's survival guide will be your go-to book, no doubt your tutors will go on about it constantly - mine do
i'm pretty sure you can get a PDF version online

/i’m willing to learn
some of my favourite cartoons are made with the program
including the beauty that is Wander Over Yander
i’d be happy to switch to another 3d program , i’ve only used Blender once
for highschool - because i was a little too ambitious
Maya eh? i do hope i learn it
so true lol
wait it is ? i always thought disney was inspired by eastern animation for
the human forms of a great number of his characters
0-0
my heart just broke
i know some shows use some form of digital animation that simulates
tradiontal but i don’t think its too popular beyond Star vs Force Of Evil (actually that may be toonboom )
and Steven Unverse.
Simpons use to do it that way but the animation has become so sluggish there i think they’ve started using flash.
i do hope i can find it
