I am assuming that this is a precursor to the Galaxy Class?

Yup...As a prototype...80 years earlier

Can you do a version of the Miranda and Nebula classes using parts from the Galaxy?

I thought you weren't going to make a Galaxy class based off of TMP specs. When I asked you if you were gonna do this you said no. What made you change your mind?

captshade In reply to SpiderTrekfan616 [2014-12-04 02:31:25 +0000 UTC]
Because it's based off of an existing fan design, so I didn't have to a lot of thinking.

Do you think you'd be able to do a Nebula class Version or maybe a prototype Ambassador class version?

Nice job. You have a good detail, design for the TMP era starship. Just like always Captshade, keep it up.

For a man with an informal scaling system named for him, you are a humble Knight-Errant...

Captain, I too have an idea for an TMP Era Galaxy Class, only; I have pieces that match or are similar to their 24th century counterparts....
Is there an way other than posting these parts to my gallery in a folder so that you can see what I have in mind?

Neat stuff...But none of the ships look like a Galaxy

I know, those are the pieces I talked about earlier, I just need someone's help to bring them together into one cohesive whole

I like the design, but not the name assigned to the ship. The NCC-1701-D looks too different from this to accept the design as being of the same class as her. Maybe she should be renamed "Galatea"- the name's similar enough to "Galaxy" to work.

MorganDonovan In reply to ArmamentDawg [2014-12-18 16:48:22 +0000 UTC]
The name Galaxy was attached to this because it was inspired by the Galaxy class USS Magellan mentioned in the novelizations for Star Trek II.Β It was supposedly an interGALACTIC range explorer, but that's not a capacity I imagined for her.
(I'm Ian Keldon BTW, a handle I no longer use actively).

The Mirror Universe's Terran Empire? I'd expect a name like "Guts-Ripper" or "Gore-Spiller" from those Nazi wannabes.

Wow...I'm honored! Ian Keldon is another of my handles, and a friend put me onto this post.
Her "official" backstory is that she was a competing proposal for the Transwarp drive development program.Β She was an update of a design first proposed in the mid 2260s for a new long-endurance explorer to replace the Connies of the day that was never built.Β Sometime in the late 2270s, the design was reworked to become a Transwarp drive testbed (using a slightly different system than Excelsior), along with numerous other experimental systems improvements such as the LAPT (Large Apeture Phaser Turret).
The prototype was launched just prior to the Genesis incident.Β On her shakedown cruise she suffered an engine malfunction and was declared lost with all hands.
Unknown to anyone at the time, her drive malfunction flung her forwards in time to the 2370s, where she re-emerged (somewhat damaged) during the Dominion War.Β Since she was otherwise a viable spaceframe with few flight hours on her, Starfleet refit her with a more conventional drive (much as Excelsior had been before her) and put her back into service.
I really like what you did with her, Captshade.Β My only suggestion would be to change the ventral stardrive phasers to also be LAPTs.
VERY good work regardless!

Wow. Quite the back story. She was a request. And as I don't do post TMP era (post 2299), I think it was an interesting compromise.

Cool.Β If, for some reason, you ever want her "original" plans (2260s style), drop me a note and I'll post them on my page for you.

LikeI said, at some point I might.Β It's a fresh audience.Β Let's face it, STSTCOLD&A is basically dead.Β I can't post on TrekBBS any more for reasons I told you about long ago.Β Starfleet Reference closed down.Β This is about the only place I still see a vibrant Trek fan-art community these days.

Inspired by the success of the nacelles-under-saucer designΒ of the Belknap platform, Starfleet sought to produce a deeps-space explorer of a more compact design than the elegant-but-long Excelsior.
Excelsior's enormous LN-88 Linear Warp Drive Engines were proven now, so cutting them down to fit a more managable, Enterprise-class profile wasn't too difficult.Β A new, larger Saucer Section, filled out both dorsally and ventrally,Β and using the new potential of the Engineering Hull from the aborted Alaska Class Battleship, a new dedicated CHE (Heavy Exploration Cruiser) class was born: The Galaxy class.

Kelso323 In reply to TheAtomicDog [2014-10-23 08:40:02 +0000 UTC]
Two questions:
1) What is the source for the LN-88? I've only ever seen Excelsior's engines referred to as the LN-72...
2) Do you have any additional information on the Alaska Class Battleship?

MorganDonovan In reply to Kelso323 [2014-12-18 16:53:11 +0000 UTC]
The different numbers work for me personally.Β Note that those aren't standard Excelsior length nacelles.
