1, are these pods automated or manned?
2, dose the pods and saucer act like the engineering section and saucer of the galaxy class? as in one fights, the other escapes?

Manned. And during "normal" operations can hold troops, refugees, or the crew from the disabled saucer. As well as doing their usual combat roles.
