I have a plan to produce a reasonably detailed all sky image. I have collected a few panels for the mosaic so far and I will hopefully finish this section of the Milky Way soon. I couldn't resist throwing what I have got so far into my panorama software. After my computer groaned away for a while it spat out this 1.2 Gig image.
A few quick adjustments and massive size reduction later, I give you my work in progress. There are some obvious colour issues there which I will need to try and tune out of the final image but pretty happy with the detail level so far. I suspect I am going to need a bigger computer to finish this project though.

Indeed When the final pic is done I will upload a full res version, but for now this is all I am offering as it really is just a work in progress.

Fantastic work Greg...!!! What software do U use for stitching? Do you know about the 64bit AutoPano Giga? - [link] ...

CapturingTheNight In reply to my-shots [2012-10-08 19:54:47 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much mate I use PTGui Pro. It handles my difficult night sky panos beautifully. I trialled both it and AutoPano Giga before settling on PTGui. They both work great and are almost the same price, but I just found PTGui's interface more user friendly to the way I think.

Mmmm... Now that would be an interesting challenge to capture and stich together a full panorama of the night sky.

Looks great Greg! Theres a few visible seams in the stiching where things don't quite line up and a couple where the colours are a different shade.

'I think I'm gonna need a bigger boat' Great line from 'Jaws'!

Fantastic image for sure, Greg Lots of detail for sure! I hope you get that bigger computer There are lots of folks who may never see a night sky unpolluted with waste light from a city.

Well, this look amazing. I love these "clouds" Speaking of computers, I s'pose you need some 8GB RAM + 1 GB on video card, 64-bit OS and at least 4-core CPU and quick SSD formatted to NTFS

No problem. But you know, now I think it may be to weak configuration for such big images as you plan to do. I was just trying to stack 33 frames of Orion in Median-mode in Darks and Lights and 2x-Drizzle, and while processing the final image DSS told me "Out of memory" Of course, I don't have the power in my computer (4GB RAM, Core2Quad @3GHz, and 512MB vRAM)... OK. I think that's enough spamming

Absolutely stunning work again Greg. I considered a project like this myself, but forgot I don't currently have a camera

If you were ever able to make that into a full size, high res print about 5 foot wide without the black areas, I would buy it off you.
