When the Kp Index hit 7 yesterday afternoon I immediately grabbed my gear and headed south looking for clear skies. I was going to head to The Winton Wetlands again but as I was approaching the turn off to the Victorian Alps a gut feeling about fog affecting my planned location made me turn off and head into the hills. The temperature was below freezing and the ice and small patches of snow made the going very slippery on the walk up to one of the highest points in the park, but when this is dancing on the horizon it is easy to forget about the cold.

Marvellous! I didn't know the southern lights are visible as far as Southern Australia.

Yes, of course. I though you can see this event very often.

You are definitely the master of night scapes Greg!
How do stop your lens fogging up and your camera being affected by the cold?

Thank you so much mate Camera versus cold is not an issue apart from decreased battery life but I run a battery grip and have 3 spare batteries so have yet to run out during a session. Camera versus dew/lens fogging can be tackled either with a dew heater strap (you can try and make your own if you are handy [link] ) or with a couple of hand warmers strapped to the lens. Big lens hood can help too.

Thanks Greg, I have a battery grip and 2 spare batteries so I should be OK. I have purchased a supply of hand warmers so I have that covered too.

Love the shot, especially the magellanic clouds (I think). They look cool .
I was somewhat disappointed only in one thing though. No snow . Out of all your shots, I don't think I have ever seen you take one of a snow capped landscape and the sky. Especially since you said it was below freezing I was looking for the snow haha xD. Either way, it's still beautiful
.

Thank you so much I have this shot: [link] A snow capped night sky landscape shot is on the list to do one night, but not many places in Australia get snow.

Haha, you're welcome . Yeah, that one is pretty nice
.
Fair point, so you only take photos in Aus? Or do you travel to some other places? E.G NZ, lots of mountains and cool scenery .

NZ is definitely towards the top of the list. Just a short trip across the Tasman but have not been there yet.
