Description Hey everyone! Wow, I've got a LOT of new watchers since I poster my last piece. (THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE SUPPORT!)
This is just a simple female figure design I used for an online tutorial to teach kids and aspiring artists how to deal with the female human body. It is all done digitally. It was a very quick color job so please take it easy
Here is a link to the tutorial if you are interested!!!
[link]
Its filled with little hints and suggestions on how to make a nice female figure.

I also want to thank my boyfriend (Who I love SO SO MUCH) for the surprise gift of a yearlong deviantart subscription! This is so amazing, I am so lucky and blessed!

Anyway, thank you to all my new deviant watchers, and I promise as soon as I have to time I will thank each of you individually!
-Carli

P.s. There are no nipples on purpose haha

This is beautiful, the body structure, the alignment, the color and shading, it's wonderful. The only oddity is the pose, it's not very natural, but in the same sense if someone were to stand in that pose on the ball of their feet it is very correct.... albeit painful. it!

Ha, I agree with you %100 the pose is definitely not natural. When I mad this tutorial my goal was to teach people how to draw the figure and then add clothes on it. I wanted to choose a pose where you could easily add high heel shoes to it so I chose one where she is standing on he tip toes

There she is. She's not quite finished yet but I thought you'd want to see her before I accidentally mess her up anyways.

JoeDoubleclick [2010-11-10 16:10:00 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, I'll give this a try. I tend to go a slightly different way with construction: more of a long kidney bean shape in order to get the concave part of the lower back, and a kind of lampshade shape for the top of the hips leading to the narrowest part of the waist, because I get lost about the 3d form without it. I think about the curve in your step one a bit, but perhaps not enough.

You're much better than me so I'll try your methods

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Carliihde In reply to JoeDoubleclick [2010-11-10 16:25:22 +0000 UTC]

the way I constructed it is a very very exaggerated version of it. My real construction is much looser and free (and thats what you really want to do in order to not make a stiff figure) I just put the construction in to help the beginners and such. Your work is really fantastic (LOVE the pumpkin carvings) I think we can all learn a little from others, I might try out the elongated kidney bean thing! and I also use a lampshade for the hips in most of my females. But yes the most important thing in all my female figure drawings that I ALWAYS start with is the line that maps the curve of the body. It really is fun to exaggerate and play with (and its sexy he he)

JoeDoubleclick In reply to Carliihde [2010-11-10 16:40:07 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that's the most important thing I can take from you, the flowing line. I try to pull and taper my shapes towards the *idea* of a flowing line. For some reason I never thought to just draw it in, which is so obvious!

Thanks for your kind words, glad you like the pumpkins! I'm about to start trying some proper sculpture now (the claims to 'sculpting in traditional media' is partial bullshit, I mean 'cutting pumpkins with a knife') in clay and/or wood.

Carliihde In reply to JoeDoubleclick [2010-11-10 21:42:11 +0000 UTC]

Yeah that figure/movement line is really important (especially in women) iv always wanted to do some sculpture work but iv never had a chance in this commercial arts school.

JoeDoubleclick In reply to Carliihde [2010-11-11 00:04:09 +0000 UTC]

Ooh, commercial arts school sounds good. I'm trying to get a constant amount of work so that I can call myself an illustrator without laughing, so that sounds like a good thing.

I'd understand if you're burnt out after everything else you do at school in a day, but if you're inclined to do more at home then Super Sculpey seems to be a great material to work with. I'm going to get some when I can. I've been lurking on the ConceptArt.org forums and seeing what people do with it, and when it sets it gets a nice flashy appearance, rubbery and a tiny bit translucent. A lot of people there post up their work step by step so you can see their methods. It seems most people build a simple wire frame, bulk that out with tinfoil, lay strips of clay on to form the impression of muscles and then put a second layer over all of that to represent the rest of the flesh and skin.

Ultimately I'd like to do wood though. From what I've learned, for thoroughly shaped detailed sculpture the ideal woods are nut and fruit trees.

What kind of sculpture do you have in mind?

Carliihde In reply to JoeDoubleclick [2010-11-12 15:21:04 +0000 UTC]

Im not sure. The truth is i've never really tried any kind of sculpture. I suppose I'd really like to sculpt figures and busts of people.

JoeDoubleclick In reply to Carliihde [2010-11-12 16:42:03 +0000 UTC]

It's amazing how regularly the sculptures by artists match their 2d styles, even when their 2d style looks like it wouldn't translate. For instance, when Alberto Ruiz started sculpting I didn't think his part pin-up/part comic/part abstract style would necessarily carry into 3d, but sure enough his 3d work was immediately recognisable.

Your drawings have so much volume and shape to them, and you clearly have no problem thinking in 3d already so I'm sure you'd be instantly having fun. If you're going to be developing lots of characters like Hourlass that you'll draw repeatedly, it might be handy to make sculptures for your own use...

and then when you come to the all-important vinyl toy stage and you don't have to pay a sculptor... ching ching

Carliihde In reply to JoeDoubleclick [2010-11-12 17:20:51 +0000 UTC]

That would be super fun. I think I'll try it out this summer and post up some photos of what I do. and you post some of your sculptures and we'll compare techniques. So Super Sculpty?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JoeDoubleclick In reply to Carliihde [2010-11-12 17:30:13 +0000 UTC]

The clay I've seen people using most at ConceptArt and those kinds of places is called Sculpey, but there are various kinds of it. The basic form, Sculpey, is a more traditional ceramic-style clay whereas Super Sculpey is the more interesting material: a kind of polymer.

There are different grades of each, and people often combine different types within the same sculpture. Some grades remain extremely flexible after baking (too flexible in some people's views), some are a little dry (but take accurate detail especially well) and some [goldilocks] are just right [/goldilocks].

I'm going to go and check some of the threads and links I saw because I need to know this stuff too, and I'll come back here and show you some things.

* When I said "flashy" I meant "fleshy". One of my most regular typos. I wasn't aware of how often I use the word "flesh" until I started noticing how often I balls that up
