Its the wrong hand and the saturation is in such a way that makes it stick out from the rest of his figure, but yeah if his fingers where facing outward then his thumb would be towards his back.
Regardless we don't know if this was intentional or not I'm more incline to believe so because it seems that there is a bit of attention drawn to it and I am much more content to enjoy the paintings "vibe" than focus on something trivial. =]

Great pic, but...
I understand it's probably a fantasy pic, but the costume and armor doesn't look very accurate. Trust me, I've seen pictures of actor in historically accurate samurai armor and costume, and they really don't look like this picture. And I doubt that particular hairstyle would be seen on a Japanese woman (or man!). Even Western artists like Richard Hook and Angus McBride did their research beforehand, and that was for books in the Osprey series.
Again, I doubt historical accuracy is what your going for, but I just had to get something off my chest. Still, great job, and entirely deserving of being a Daily Deviation.
