Step. Step, Step.

A beat as constant as my breath. A beat I need to keep going. No matter what.

Step. Step. Step.

I move along the walkway, head down, eyes narrowed. My thoughts wander without the focus of my step. A song mingles with a conversation with my parents. The picture of a sword fighter fuses with a water nymph to create some abomination. They are both gone with the next movement of my feet.

Step. Step. Step.

Few people pass me. I hear their footsteps, their own movements, but don't look up. I don't acknowledge them because I don't remember how to.

Step. Step. Step.

The walkway will end soon, my mind tells me amidst the primordial soup. You need to be ready. So, I look up while keeping my pace.

Step. Step. Clack.

I freeze. The world shifts at that sound. A heel hitting the floor.

My beat is broken. A new beat comes from behind me, faster than my previous steps.

Clack. Clack. Clack clack.

This beat is faster, stronger, more assertive. It is greater than me; I don't deny that to myself. I bask in its glow as the commoner bathes in their lord's presence.

Clack clack. Clack. Clack clack.

Such asymmetry! Such dynamic structure! It's amazing to hear, I don't want it to end.

Something brushes past me. I dare not look at it, for fear of going blind. The clacks travel with it, out of my sight and senses. Like the wind, they vanish into the unknown. Never to return.
