The picture was only done in 2 layers (One background and one for the terminator), that's just the way I work though - colour or mono. I don't think that the amount of layers really makes a difference to a piece, just what you're comfortable using.

I started with a plain grey background in photoshop and then blocked out the terminator in a slightly lighter shade against that. Then I chose a lighter colour, almost pure white but not quite, using a low opacity to build up where the armour would reflect brightest. The image was flattened back down to one after the basics were done and increased from that.

I would say that although this is a quick image the two most important things that helped it were knowing where the light was coming from before I started - light is always important and doubly so in greyscale - and having reference close to hand (I had one of my old terminator models to use for this)

I used only basic brushes from photoshop and avoided the softer airbrushes, which can make the image seem too flat. I only ever use them for blending shades, and I never got to that level with this.

I agree. Had to stop to concentrate on other works, hopefully I can go back and finish it someday.
