The Protector gargoyle has a classic Hollywood Gothic feel to him, he holds a disembodied skull in his arms as though he is protecting it, crouching, warily eying anyone who passes by.I sculpted this creation in Klean Clay, made a silicone rubber mold from it and cast them in Hydrostone. This was while Cast Shadows had a studio in Meriden, CT from 1992 to 1997.
Now my castings are made from a material called Forton MG, which is a mixture of an acrylic resin and gypsum cement. They are very strong and chip resistant...and they can go outdoors, it has the feel and strength of stone.

The exact origin of this creature and it's habits are unclear...but we think we know this much:
Β He was once believed to be a scavenger, who in the darkest hours of night, would search the fresh battle fields for the fallen and dying...gathering lost souls...and feeding on the remains of the dead.
While he is most certainly ancient, his true name is not known, but in modern times he has been referred to as the Protector, although not for reasons you might think, but rather because of his reluctance to release the human skull in his hands.
It has been sugested that if he collects enough souls (represented by the skull) he will regain his lost wings, which will enable him to ascend to a higher realm...but this will most likely be difficult to do...as he is made from stone! Β
