On the contrary, if you can call it "ripping off" SanDisk was mentioned in the article. But I agree I hold nothing but contempt for Apple. All they are is a monopolizing giant that over charges for their products just because they're "cool."

I think that *catdevnull was trying to say is that whenever a product gets super-popular, the general public tends to associate the most popular brandname as the standard for the product:
tissue: Kleenex
make a copy: Xerox it
give me some aspirin: give me a Tylenol (I've heard that one a lot, which is funny, since Tylenol doesn't have aspirin in it)
I need a soft drink: Coke please (I've heard people use Coke to describe any sort of soda....including pepsi products D: )

I am aware of what he was trying to say, but this does not apply here. How would, for example, an owner of a multimedia-enabled device be able to tell that the iPod format works on his phone/pda/whatever as well?
We never say Kleenex instead of a tissue. We never use Tylenol, we never say Coke. Only Americans do that (and maybe Canadians too). For an international community, I think it's a weee biased.

But I also believe that a big part of what makes deviantART deviantART is that we typically don't go with the flow. Its what makes us cool. I think "Portable video player format" may be a better term. Like the Zune may be taking up ground sooner or later (I hope). Only time will tell.

i've never played with a zune, i'd heard some bad things about them, but i suppose that was all first generation glitches....but i'm in love with my iPod a little, so the use of ipod terminology doesn't really bother me.

lol i just heard that it was glitchy, and had issues microsoft needed to work out but they released it too early...basically to wait for a 2G one....so i went ahead and bought the video iPod i'd been lusting over as well.

Ehh, it's not so much glitchy as it has crappy firmware restrictions. Most everything works with it, it just cant work as well as it could because of the stupid music industry. 3 days 3 plays sucks. G2 is gonna be out before Christmas apparently though. So we'll see. I love my Zune though, mostly because not a lot of people have them. I <3 black sheep.
