It was a bombshell that would break the tabloids and it was completely intentional. Foxfire was back in the racing game after his infamous collapse after the final tier of the Triple Crown and he was looking better than ever: he’d started filling in more, his muscles showing after all his rigorous triaining (curtesy of a very demanded Shetland pony colt) finally starting to loose his baby appearance, though he still had the body of a three year old and still had some filing out left to do. Amalie admittedly hoped he’d keep his more lithe form rather than becoming more like the man-mountain his grandfather had been, after all both Fox and his sire Abyaz were quite lithe in comparison.

There had been a lot of gossip floating around; that Foxfire’s career was over, that the sickly colt should never have raced or, and the most outrageous and untrue, that he had sadly passed away. Amalie had taken to social media with a picture of him out in the pasture with Ghost, Abyaz and Percy with the caption “Fox died? Why didn’t you tell me Buddy?” That particular rumour took to the grave instead almost instantly.

Amalie had been keeping him fit for the duration of his recovery, as the young, energetic racing colt had far too many sparks in his hooves to be on complete bed rest - and she’d like anyone who disagreed with her training him again after only a few months try telling a five year old child to sit for longer than ten minutes before they’re up the curtains. As a result, after six months, she considered Fox fit and healthy enough to return to racing.

She decided to start out with smaller races to get him back in the swing but she wasnt going to lower her standard either. Fox was the 2018 winner of the Kentucky Derby and it wouldn’t do to have him racing in some tiny unheard of track where no one could see his comeback. After all, BTs Mustard Blue’s owners had been suffering a tough time but they didn’t lower their standards one inch; Fox deserved no less.

Santa Anita was a familiar track, it was one they’d raced often. Amalie knew it well and her relaxed aura could only help Fox. Percy, as usual, joined them, nipping occasionally at Fox’s legs with Fox lightly shoving him away in the kid of manner only bickering brothers could. It was nice to see that nothing had really changed. Fox had been missing for six months but when he returned it was as if he was picking up right from where he left off. There was something comforting about that fact in their ever changing world.

Fox obediently followed where he was led as they headed out onto the dirt track, turning his head and sticking out that oh so famous tongue for all the flashing cameras. Amalie idly remembered his two year old debut back at Devils Night Downs when the flash of the cameras had spooked him so hard she’d nearly been thrown from his back. Now the colt seemed to actually enjoy posing for the cameras and basking in the attention of people who were so glad to see him back.

Amalie knew a lot of people would be watching them in this race even if not many of them were betting on them.

“Let’s give ‘em a show, Buddy.”
