Description
Lucy has attatched herself to Amalie and since Amalie will be staying at FHF for the duration of the Triple Crown with Fox, Amalie decided to spend some extra time with the newest member of the Antrium family.Their last interaction can be seen here .
__
“That’s kinda creepy, you know,” Amalie said, eyes still closed with a smile on her face. The culprit lowered their phone, jumping slightly in surprise that Amalie was awake and not asleep as they’d thought. She opened her eyes and smirked. “Busted.”
“Happily. And it’s not creepy, it’s adorable, I’ll even send you the pictures.” Freya said, sitting on the armchair opposite the couch Amalie was stretched out on with the little five year old on her chest. Freya sat cross-legged, scrolling through the photos and editing them slightly.
“You snuck into my room without knocking and took photos of me; that’s creepy.”
Freya scoffed and gave her friend a deadpan expression. “‘Your room’ - Amalie this is the girls common room, it’s technically mine too. Yes, I know, you’re the only one who uses it and this corner of the house is practically yours but still.” Freya shrugged and sent back to the photos. “Besides, if - oh let’s be honest - when you marry Harley you’d move out and then I get this room to myself.” She said, sticking her tongue out.
Amalie just chuckled. It had been a bit of a long-standing joke between the pair, since Amalie and Freya were practically best friends and this part of the house had been given to Amalie when she’d been adopted yet was for the girls that lived at AS if they wanted to relax without the boys around, Freya was allowed her use of the room but generally didn’t come in unless she had her friends permission. It was like an unspoken curtesy, one the redhead greatly valued and appreciated.
“Any of the pictures good?” Amalie asked, casually.
“Yeah, one. The others are either not as good or blurry thanks to you suddenly talking. Anyway, sent you it.” Freya put her phone aside and pulled a cushion in front of her to hug. “Now, fess up. What’s eating you?”
“Huh?”
“You’ve not been yourself for a while now. True, you’ve entered your pride and joy into one of the biggest race events of the year and you’re stressed but you act different when you’re stressed. Now you just seem... distracted? Which doesn’t fit with your usual ‘Must train Fox to the highest calibre’ mood.”
“Am I that predictable?”
“Only if we love you.” Freya said, blowing her a kiss. Amalie smiled and looked back down at the still sleeping Lucy.
“Guess I’ve just been taking trips down memory lane. I wasn’t too much older than Lucy when Sou took me in. Lucy is an absolute joy but me... sometimes I wonder how Sobian handled me. Lucy’s easy to play with and look after, she’s so sweet and loves horses but me? I wasn’t anything like that, and Sou already had the estate, Lily and the loss of her leg to juggle.”
“True however Lucy is not a younger you and you are not Sobian. True, Sou’s pretty impressive but she’s paid quite the price, from what I heard, and unlike you she’s not gaining as much as she lost,” she pointed at Lucy, “and she isn’t sad, lonely little girl. She has her brother, who trains and rides with her three times a week, her parents still love her and haven’t abandoned her they’re just busy. She’s sweet and happy because she doesn’t know any better and that doesn’t mean that you have to protect that.”
Amalie looked up at her with an arched eyebrow. “I’m impressed, but that’s not what I’m doing. Truly, it’s simply that we took an instant shine to each other. There’s no deep undertone to my actions, just that I’m thinking more.”
“Think so hard as to miss or choose to ignore my comment on you moving out?”
Amalie chuckled, not surprised at all that the subject came up. “Even if I didn’t marry Harley I’d probably move out at some point. I need to do something with my Father’s farm, it breaks my heart to think of it lying there, decaying. It deserves to be used and I don’t have it in me to sell it.”
“...” Freya seemed to ponder her next words when Amalie spoke up again.
“Harley and I have talked about it.”
The pillow went flying across the room and Freya sat up, only for her to silently curse under in breath (the words were PG rated regardless, that’s what happens when you watch cartoons with children and start copying the PG curses) and dashed off to fetch it again before settling back in the armchair. Amalie tried very hard not to laugh so as not to wake Lucy but it seemed the child could sleep like a log.
“Comfortable?”
“Yes, now, could you repeat that?”
“You’re acting like a child - you heard me.”
“Don’t be like that, half of the worlds occupants wants to know if you two are tying the knot.”
“You mean like Kaira and Con being back together?”
“Ye - they are?” Freya was sidetracked for a moment before shaking her head, “we’ll return to that over Netflix later - now, please treat me as the best friend I totally am and let me in on your love life.”
Amalie dearly wished Freya had picked some other time than now, with a child sleeping on her chest, to discuss this: trying to hold in her laughter was devilishly hard. “We’ve discussed what would happen, nothing more. Don’t worry, if I get married you will be one of my bridesmaids, I promise.”
“Thank you, but not what I’m fishing for.”
“I know. Look, we only discussed what we would do career-wise if we did get married. We didn’t even really reach a conclusion, just discussed possible avenues. We’re both pretty ambitious after all and neither of us want to stunt the others plans. I mean, heck, have you heard Harley’s plans for Fox Harbers bloodlines? He’s got plans for the next few decades!”
“I did hear, yeah, but you’re not nearly as ambitious. You’ve never needed a physical home, your home is in the saddle or where your horses are. You could live as a gypsy so long as you could still race.”
“True... I’d have nothing to loose and everything to gain. It’s not like our business lives would change, we’ve always been competitors in the saddle. I certainly don’t see that changing, no matter which way things go.”
Freya looked confused for a moment before something akin to a slow panic starting building on her face. “Amalie... do you actually think there’s even a possibility he’ll break up with you?”
Amalie was quite for a few seconds but spoke in all seriousness. “There’s always a possibility.”
“Bull. I know your outlook borders on the pessimistic but -”
“It’s simply a fact. Not one I dwell on and I certainly don’t want it but it’s something that’s on the table - buried at the bottom underneath every other scenario true but there. I’m just prepared for it to take a bad turn. Otherwise... I’m just waiting on him.”
Freya didn’t say anything though she seemed satisfied. They sat in silence for a few minutes before the brunette shrugged and sighed. “Fine, wise if not a little faithless. Still, I want to make sure you know you make him happy - you’ve a terrible habit of forgoing self-esteem.”
“Ha, no, no, I’m quite aware of how much we mean to each other. As I said, at this point I’m just waiting on him. But he can take him time, it’s something we both have. We both have other things in our lives right now and the pace we’re at is fine. Happy?”
“Satisfied.” Freya conceded. “Little Luce won’t be though. She know you’re leaving for a few months?”
“Yes, poor thing. Wasn’t very happy but I promised to FaceTime. She said she’d bring Callie and Muggie a polomint every weekend.”
“Yeesh, not the healthiest for two young workers...”
“Hey, it took quite a bit of bartering to get it down from ‘everyday’.” Amalie chuckled.
“Lily looking after her?” Freya asked. Amalie snickered and her friend looked at her confused.
“I like how we’re discussing who will look after her and not including her brother,” she joked, causing Freya to smirk and shrug, “but yes, Lily and Max will keep her busy. Lily’s taking lessons with her after all.”
“Nice.” Freya stood, returning the cushion. “See ya, ginger, have a good flight tomorrow.”
“Thank you.”
