Description
Wow, this is almost 3000x3000 pixels... No wonder I was able to draw the bucket all the way back there.Anyhow, I was suddenly inspired by TheEnigmaMachine 's story, Iron Oxide, specifically Chapter 17... I hope you don't mind .w.
This is probably the best thing I've drawn so far. I am quite pleased, even though I ended up not shading the characters because the file was so big I couldn't use my normal method... At least I shaded the bucket? I did manage a background, even though it doesn't really scream 'industrial cavern' to me xD
I know it said the Egg Pawn was wearing a jetpack but all I could think of was the Jet Booster upgrade for Gamma in SA1, so I drew that instead of trying to figure out a jetpack. I hope I colored the Egg Pawn properly, because I googled one and used him as a ref.

Awesome work! I loved this scene from the fanfic. The Egg Pawn looks really cool and all the details in the closet are a nice touch.

It was one of my favorite scenes. "Act like a mop" xD

Oh my gosh this looks so amazing!
I simply love this too much for words! You did a really great job with the perspective in this piece.
The way the tunnel disappears into the bottom, as well as the closet on the top, are both really well done with their perspective.
I also love all the details you put in this picture! Not only is there the bucket in the closet, but you also included the electrical outlet too!
Sonic is also perfect here. I think you captured his facial expression perfectly, and I really like how you designed his robotic leg! It blends into the rest of his design seamlessly, yet still looks very robotic. Metal is perfect here as well. His body language and eyes show us how he feels very well.
And you colored the Egg Pawn basically exactly how I imagined them. xD I actually really like the jet booster for this image! It's easier to see what he's doing, and keeps everything feeling very sci-fi. Well done all around, and I even begin to tell you how exciting it is that you illustrated this scene! xD
Also, I'd love to share this, so would you mind if I posted a link to this with the next update of Iron Oxide? I am sure the other readers would love to see it.

I'm so glad you like it~ Kind of surprised with the perspective, though. I kinda just drew a line for the edge and guesstimated the way it would work. I can't believe it worked out so well, since perspective is one of those things I'm not so great at.
I actually wasn't thinking about the outlet until I realized I'd almost saved the final image without putting a little bit of water in the bucket like I'd wanted, but it made it in in the end~
I wasn't really sure how it looked in the story so I just gave him a slightly different version of Metal's leg. I've gotten pretty good at drawing that shape, too, so that helped.
The Jet Booster was one of the coolest looking upgrades in SA1. I think the flame is actually green, but I went with blue so I could just steal the colors from a photo of a gas stove xD
I have no problems if you want to do that. People don't usually see my art anyway, so if a few people check it out and like it as much as you do, I would love it.

Oh yeah, perspective is definitely tricky. I struggle with it a lot myself, but I think you managed it really well in this piece!
When I wrote the story, I left Sonic's robotic leg deliberately ambiguously describe. It's meant to basically look like his other leg, but robotic, so I think you captured it perfectly here.
And that sounds great! I'll share a link to this the next time I update Iron Oxide.

Perspective with round objects is the worst of all. I remember in High School when I took Graphic Design, the wheels on our car assignment were being so annoying xD
*sighs* I bet it was so much easier before they invented perspective 8( sure all the art looked weird, but people expected so much less of it xD
Have you ever played any of the Persona games? (Mainly P3 and P4)

Oh yeah, perspective is a real challenge. I need to practice it more myself. I got a whole book on perspective theory, but I still need to read it and do the exercises. xD
I played all of Persona 4, and maybe the first 3rd of Persona 3. It's been several years since I played either though. I remember they were fun, but I could never get past the dragging middle part of Persona 3.

I usually find tutorials on tumblr that just pop up on my dash and teach me random art tips xD I learned the other day that you can draw the same face, and depending on where you put the eyes, it ages the character. I haven't played around with it much, but it was really cool to watch them draw it.
Huh, I was half expecting you to say no... xD I never find anyone who plays them. My mom and I love both games, but she prefers P4 an d I prefer P3. I just like that you die at the end of P3 because I apparently like to make myself really sad. (Alas, my OTP was never meant to be... *cries*)
I've had this idea for a crossover between Sonic and Persona, I just have no idea who should get what Arcana/Persona, aside from Sonic and Tails... MAYBE Metal, if I don't change my mind again. I wonder how the game developers had all the time they needed to research mythological figures and determine what aracana they would fit in. My brain starts to hurt after a while xD

Oh yeah, I've seen a handful of tutorials like that too. They are definitely useful. Lately, I've been trying to study the very basics of drawing. I hope that if I can understand the basics it will help me draw more complicated things. There's a lot to learn, but I think I am making progress!
A crossover between Sonic and Persona sounds cool! Which Personas did you have in mind for Sonic/Metal/Tails?

I remember in high school my art teacher had us watch different people drawing realistic facial features for the dreaded self portrait, and I was really good at realistic eyes for like a month xD
I've really only decided on one Persona so far... I was looking at a fox version of Nekomata for Tails. I just pictured this cute little fox with electricity sparking between its tails. (Though I made a huge mistake looking up images of fox-based creatures last night... I always forget that fox seems to be synonymous with furry porn on tumblr) Everyone else I'm still looking for a Persona, or just trying to decide on an Arcana. I wanted Sonic to be the Fool, and I made Tails the Magician, I think Metal is going to be the Death Aracana, just based on how I want his character development to go when I get to his dungeon.

Yeah, drawing from life references like that is really useful! I sometimes follow a similar strategy with my metonic pieces. I will usually try to find a reference of people in the pose I want, then I translate that pose into Sonic character anatomy.
I think that Persona for Tails, as well as the Arcana for the rest of them, are perfect! Tails is very handy, so the Magician is perfect for him, while Sonic is nearly a textbook version of the Fool. Metal being Death is a nice twist, and I see it fitting his character perfectly.

When I was in 11th grade I would sometimes doodle my classmates instead of paying attention. I also find when drawing from ref, fiping it upside down and drawing the smaller shapes is easier than looking at a face and trying to draw that.
I finally decided to call his Persona Inari, which is what Wikipedia says the more benevolent fox spirits can be called. And I gt really lucky last night on researching potential Personas, and now Metal's Persona is going be Simulacrum, who just needs to be designed in my head. I'm so excited for Metal's dungeon, even though he's going to be much further into the story than I even have planned right now... xD

Ha, I always did that in class too. xD It was pretty bad. Sometimes my notebook had more drawings than notes!
But your plan for your story sounds great! I'd love to read it if you ever publish it. And I think it makes sense to make Metal's dungeon later in the story. His character is the type that I can imagine him popping up later. Plus, if it were a real game, I imagine Metal's dungeon would be difficult, so it makes sense to keep it until later.

For the first time ever, I haven't doodled in one of my notebooks, so maybe taking notes on graphing paper is a good way to pay attention more? xD
Knowing me, I'll probably never get more than a few chapters, but I'm gonna try really hard to do it this time! I'll have to avoid trying to write it all at one time before posting it, which never works out very well. xD
I'm kind of picturing Metal's dungeon being 'That One Level' and making it long and really hard to get through. And then you still have to fight the shadow at the end xD I'm not sure what the theme of the dungeon would be yet, but I'm thinking along the lines of his rival fight in Generations for the look of it.

Oh man, getting it all written before posting makes the final story better, but I do agree it can make it easier to stay motivated. I can't tell you how many times I forced myself to work late into the night for Iron Oxide because I know people are reading it, and it would be too easy for me to never write it if I didn't have a schedule.
And yeah, Metal's dungeon would totally be "that one level". xD Stardust Speedway would actually make a great dungeon theme because of it's good and bad futures. I can see something like the good future after he is save, whereas it would be the bad future before.

That's exactly why I've only ever finished one fanfic from start to finish. Every other story has either one or two chapters and a 'to be finished probably never' sticker.
I've never played Sonic CD but I have it on an emulation of Sonic Gems Collection, so I might go do that to get a better feel for the place. It's just a bit disorienting playing a game meant for a small screen on a computer monitor many times larger...
I'm tempted to tell everyone to listen to the Stardust Speedway theme whenever I get to that part though. I love that theme so much. The temptation is too great, I probably won't be able to resist xD)
That reminds me, it's not relevant to this conversation but I just found out that apparently Metal was supposed to have his own playable story mode in Sonic 06 (with Tails as his rival for some reason?) and I am so much more disappointed in that game than I used to be. (I actually liked it just for Silver and Mephiles, and that final fight against Solaris) Apparently Knuckles Rouge and Tails were supposed to have their own story campaigns as well. This just fuels my 'Sonic Team needs to remake Sonic 06 the way it was supposed to be originally as a take that to everyone who says nothing can fix 06' fantasy...

I will say, once I get sufficiently far in a story, the desire to see it finished will pull me through. Like for Iron Oxide, since the story is 2/3 done, I feel more motivated than ever to finish the last 1/3 and make it really strong. I would say the middle is the hardest part, and that's why sometimes posting as you go can help pull you through that.
It is a little weird to play Sonic CD on a full screen, but you do get used to it. The soundtrack is amazing. I listen to it everyday. xD
And yeah, I remember that about Metal in 06! I think Sonic 06 tried to do too many things at once, and that's why the whole thing imploded. It's a shame, because it would have been a great Sonic Adventure 3 type title if they had finished it properly. Unfortunately, I don't think Sega is ever going to fix it. They seem to be moving toward the Sonic Generations direction with the latest game, and I wouldn't be surprised if that's what we see from now on. Don't get me wrong, I love Generations, but it's a little bit of a shame that the Adventure-style is just off their radar.

A lot of my trouble also comes from starting the first chapter. I can never seem to get something I like. My researching has gone so well this time though, I'll be sad mad at myself if I don't get at least somewhere this time around~
I played the first level and I don't think it was meant for the size of my computer screen at all. Sonic's sprite was blown up so much at actually looked a bit blurry when he ran. I have no idea how I beat the level.
If they hadn't tried to make Secret Rings at the same time on top of rushing their deadline... As much as I hate when a game's release date is pushed back, it usually means when it finally does come out it's better than it would have been three months earlier.
I was actually thinking about that yesterday. I miss have a hub world and different play styles. Generations was fun, but after a while I just want to stop boosting and explore the level a bit.
I'm also eagerly awaiting the return of the Chao Gardens.

The first chapter is definitely tricky. I find the best way to manage is to just jump in. I almost always end up rewriting the first chapter several times, but I'll never make any progress unless I just write crap for awhile xD
I hope Sega eventually makes a Chao Garden mobile game. I don't understand why they haven't yet. They keep making mobile games, and the Chao Garden would be too perfect.

I find that it's hard to start writing and then wait until the end of the chapter to start editing. I'll write three sentences and sit there like 'well I guess I should spend an hour editing this massive pile of words I just wrote' xD
I would never stop playing if they made a mobile Chao Garden game. They could do so much! We could have a special Chao for every character, and we could play as characters like Mephiless or something like that and have so many adorable little weirdos running around~ Introduce new animals to give to them, more minigames, *rambles on and on for way too long*
