Description
All Right, so here's the second part of my John Donne, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood crossover. The poem I chose is the second one of the John Donne romantic poems that I encountered. It's called "The Sun Rising":
Busy old fool, unruly sun,
Why dost thou thus,
Through windows, and through curtains call on us?
Must to thy motions lovers' seasons run?
Saucy pedantic wretch, go chide
Late school boys and sour prentices,
Go tell court huntsmen that the king will ride,
Call country ants to harvest offices,
Love, all alike, no season knows nor clime,
Nor hours, days, months, which are the rags of time.
Thy beams, so reverend and strong
Why shouldst thou think?
I could eclipse and cloud them with a wink,
But that I would not lose her sight so long;
If her eyes have not blinded thine,
Look, and tomorrow late, tell me,
Whether both th' Indias of spice and mine
Be where thou leftst them, or lie here with me.
Ask for those kings whom thou saw'st yesterday,
And thou shalt hear, All here in one bed lay.
She's all states, and all princes, I,
Nothing else is.
Princes do but play us; compared to this,
All honor's mimic, all wealth alchemy.
Thou, sun, art half as happy as we,
In that the world's contracted thus.
Thine age asks ease, and since thy duties be
To warm the world, that's done in warming us.
Shine here to us, and thou art everywhere;
This bed thy center is, these walls, thy sphere.
Bascially, in the poem, the lovers have had sex, and then the next morning, the male lover wakes up because he feels that the sun is disturbing him. In the first stanza, he scolds the sun for disturbing them. In the second stanza, he says that he--as a lover--is more powerful than the sun, and that she(his lover) is more beautiful than anything in the world. Then, he goes on to show how his relationship is more important than anything in the entire universe.
I think this poem is really beautiful. At first, I thought to match the poem to Lingfan, since it has mentions of Princes in it, but then I realised that Lingfan is better represented by a different poem. So, this poem needed a mature couple, and I thought of Royai. I thought that the ideas of Princes and States represent Roy's desire to become Furher, but also that the feelings in the poem were well represented by Roy's feelings for Riza.
I'm quite proud of how things turned out--particularly Riza's tattoo--although the effect of the Sun peeping in didn't come across too well.

You can see that Roy is a little pissed because of the sun. Great realization! I also noticed at first how awesome Riza's tattoo is looking! Well done I also love the little details: the books, the pistole and the gloves.
And again a litte trick for the sun: You could try chalk next time. Draw sun's rays and blur them at the end with a sponge or handkerchief.
(I hope it's ok for you that I share some of my tricks. )

Roy is not happy about the sun Originally, I was going to have Maes in here, silhouetted against the sun, as if he were the sun bothering Roy, but I gave up on that idea for two reasons: It was too jokey for the tone of the poem, and I lack the drawing skills to pull it off.
I'm glad you liked Riza's tattoo. I took a photograph of the tattoo while I was watching Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, so I had it as a reference.
The details were added because the bedroom seemed too plain.
Chalk--I never thought of that. I always draw in coloured pencils, or pencil crayon--I think I'd like to give that a try and see if I can pull it off. Thank you again for the advice--I'm so grateful for it!

omg yes it would have been even more funny of Maes would have been there but I agree that it's better without him for the peom.
I also wouldn't have drawn it from memory because I couldn't have remembered one thing. It's always ok to use references!
haha that's the reason why my pictures have so many details: "It seems so empty *adds a thing*" "her clothes seem so boring *adds some pattern and frills*
always the same that's why I spend so much time in a single picture
I also only used coloured pencils but I noticed that there is a limit using them. Or at least I'm not good enough to use them properly or it could be that I only have cheap pencils... good pencils have always wax components which are perfect to blurr the colours a bit (just draw with a white one all over the parts you want to blur and you'll get a nice effect) I always try to experiment with different materials I have at home if things don't turn out how I want them to.
You can use chalk also as perfekt material for soft backgrounds (sunrises, sunsets) just merge purple, blue, orange and red colours a bit.

I always end up using references, particularly for poses, kissing scenes or for the colouring of a character. I want people to be able to recognise the people I'm drawing.
Still, the details you put in are amazing, and always appreciated. And the end result is completely worth it.
I think there are limits to them--but it could be that they weren't the best. I know that the ones I use are the cheap ones, because the proper ones are FAR out of my price range. Chalk sounds like a great material to try experiment with.
Thanks for the tips about the sunsets!

That's good! I use references less and less. I can't find references for the poses I want to draw I also got relatively well without them. Yes, I also need them when I first time draw a character but if I have drawn a character several times (like Greed) I only need his colour palette.
weee thank you! I love details... and also hate them. But they look so nice so I have to add details everytime.
True. Most of the good ones are expensive as hell like Faber Castell or LYRA. I have some LYRA pensicls at home and they are so awesome!
You're very welcome! Good luck with your experiments.

I still need references for poses, but I also find that if I've drawn a character alot (like Wizardmon) I can get by without seeing a picture of him.
I'm so glad you do!
My mom got me a pack of Faber Castel, once, but the people working at the stationers must have dropped them, because everytime I tried to sharpen them, they broke. I've never heard of LYRA before--they sound amazing!
Fingers crossed they go well.

I use pose references when my brain doesn't want to give me any ideas but I feel like drawing
Oh no, but they say Faber Castel have hard leads so they don't break.
That's really sad but I hope you'll get better ones nect time.
Oh I just noticed that LYRA is a German company! They are really good but also a little expensive >.<

That's a great reason to uses poses.
They're supposed to, but the people working at the stationers obviously aren't careful with their products.
Still, I found another stationers with some lovely pencils that I'm keen to try, so we'll see how these go--and if they're broken too . . .
As my one friend said "cheap things no good, good thing no cheap."

haha yes, I know
It seems so But it's everywhere the same. I'm very finicky when it comes to books. I don't like if they have even little damages but it seems like people don't care about books.
Good luck with your new pencils!
haha true but not every cheap thing is bad

Nope, definitely not every cheap thing is bad.
I'm slightly different--though my new books need to be pristine, I love my second hand ones!

Like our friendship, it costs no money but is worth everything in the world.
That's ok! I respekt if people love it like that! But some people really don't care about it and make fun of me because I love my stuff to be pristine.

Awww Your friendship means so much to me too!
I won't ever make fun of someone because of that. I freak out if my new books get damaged, so I know exactly what you mean.
And my family is the same--especially with their cars.

awwww
That's good to hear. I don't know why people have to make fun of it. Fun fact: Everyone who got to know me and my quirk they start paying more attention to their books either. My boyfriend also didn't care that much when he reads a book so after he was done reading it you can see the book was used. (My books always looks like new
) but since he knows me he started to be careful but he still afraid of reading my books because he knows how much I love and care about them.
yeah cars, cars are expensive and you have to be careful. Noone would say you're weird because you don't want to have scartches or other damages on your car but if it's about a book it's an "article of daily use". I bought a book once and one pages was ripped a little so I wanted to exchange it and the seller said. "You know that a book is an article of daily use. So it can happend!" It wasn't my fault and she really doesn't want to exchange the book but she had to. A car is nothing else than an "article of daily use" it's just a little more expensive.

I like the fact that your habit has affected other people. My friends also don't want to lend my books in case they damage them.
I think that no one should mock another person because they want their stuff to be in good condition. Whether it's a car or a book is irrelevant, in my opinion.

haha yes, I also like it. I mean I don't force anybody to do so but it's still funny
I always say "Ah don't worry, if you damage them, just buy me a new one" Maybe people are afraid of that :'D
Yes, that also my opinion. Nobody needs to think the sameway but just respect that other people like it like that.

Would you believe that I say that to my friends too? And, once I loaned a book to my one friend, and a bug died on it, and he had a freakout because it was my book.

hahaha omg, you do?
Oh my, your poor friends. The bug chose a great place to die. I hope it wasn't because the book was deadly boring for it.

Yeah, my poor friends. They have to guard my books with their lives! I think the bug died because my friend put on his mosquito coil, not because of the book (I hope)
