Proposal (Free Writing Exercise)

"Tamara Lynch?"

I look to the side of where I am standing, and see my long-time partner, Scott Moore, down on one knee, a ring box held in his hands, and a smile fixed on his face. I gasp - half in surprise, but half in shock. I know what's coming next - and, surprisingly, I do not know how I'm supposed to feel about it.

"Will you marry me?" Scott asks, a hopeful edge to his voice. I'd say yes, of course I will - hell, I love the guy more than my own life - but there's something holding me back.

Something hidden deep inside my psyche.

The memories of what could be described as the worst day of my life suddenly come flooding back - the memories of having to see my previous fiancé be shot dead at our wedding, and the tears I had shed for days afterwards.

I couldn't let it happen again.

But I was willing to take the chance.

"Yes," I say, breathlessly, and Scott smiles at me. I smile back.
